Didn't I Hear This Before ?? Contemporary Playback..,
By Original Mixed Up-Kid "jg" (New York United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Private Revolution (Audio CD)
This multi instrumentalist artist left The Scottish Mott The Hoopleish Van Morrison type of band,The Waterboys, to be on his own for a Utopian dream of rock and roll idyllic passion, and with this really fine album, Karl was able to fuse 1960's psychedelia's finest from The Beatles, bluesy Dylan, strong hint of Mick Jagger's singing and posturing to the dynamic LA hipsters of that day, The Doors, and Arthur Lee's Love, fast forward to incorporate The melodrama and bittersweet sophistication of Echo and The Bunnymen with a touch of funk and Beach Boys harmonies rolled in with a gloss of sincere ruminations on peace and love in the vein of Timothy Leary and this sprighty synthesized often happy wash of sound is World Party. The funny thing is that despite the collective unconscious at work here, the whole CD plays well and rocks and serves as a reminder of all those great trends within music. The whole thing clicks and still manages to sound ORIGINAL coming from a One Man Band..waiting to hear the remastered version, the original CD sounds fine akin in spirit to the studio wizadry of a Prince, the self absorbed classic of Paul McCartney's 1st album, and the mystical solo greatness of Pete Townsend's, Who Came First.
Private Revolution may be a solo effort but it sounds like a band.

My all time favorite album,
By "dal8" (Eugene, Or) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Private Revolution (Audio CD)
This is my all time favorite album. I'm not a music critic so I wouldn't do the album justice to try and convince anyone based on words. You've simply gotta listen to the best music on the planet. I have been trying to find a copy of the "Ship of fools" video now for years without success. Now that Karl has rereleased his older albums with the videos he'll be parting me from even more of my cash! Way to go Karl.

I bought this album not long after it came out in 1986. The only song I'd heard from it was "Ship of Fools". I didn't care much for the rest but grew to like nearly the entire album. "All Come True" is one of the best songs, follow the bass to get the full effect. Another of my favorites is "It Can Be Beautiful (Sometimes)", which I didn't see mentioned. I've read that the following album "Goodbye Jumbo" is the magnum opus but I don't believe so. This is one of the best albums from '86 and has a different sound than most of the rock that was playing then. "Ship of Fools" has a message that still holds true today.
