Book Description

February 1, 2002
The Privilege of Love: Camaldolese Benedictine Spirituality is a collection of essays by Camaldolese monks, nuns, and oblates. After an introduction by Michael Downey and an overview chapter on Camaldolese Benedictine history and spirituality, three chapters center on the Benedictine aspects of spirituality, such as liturgy, lectio divina, and Word/Wisdom of God. The book focuses on Camaldolese sources, eremitical/cenobitical dialectic, and solitude, followed by chapters on Camaldolese ecumenical and interreligious involvement, as well as oblate spirituality. The concluding chapter comments on Camaldolese Benedictine spirituality in a post-Vatican II context.

If a Franciscan has anything to say about monastic wisdom, I think this is excellent spirituality. -- Richard Rohr, O.F.M., Center for Action and Contemplation, Albuquerque, New Mexico

I can't say enough about the beauty of this book. It is worth double the cost just for the chapters on Liturgy of the Hours and scripture study. There are simple chapters and complicated chapters. This is one book you will keep on your shelf for multiple readings and spiritual lifts over the years.

This book covers the history of the Camaldolese interpretation of the Rule of St. Benedict and has much to offer the layperson's application of this rule in our secular society. Our culture does not see the importance of solitude and quiet pursuit of God. I found it very helpful.

When Saint Romuald of Ravenna began drawing disciples to himself, gathering isolated hermits and eremitical groups into community, making monastic foundations, refounding already extant houses under reformed principles and speaking out against ecclesiastical decadence slightly over one millennium ago, little did he realize that his movement would develop into a religious order. Read the first page
