Very thorough coverage of ASP.NET 4,
This review is from: Pro ASP.NET 4 in VB 2010 (Paperback)
So you want develop ASP.NET web sites? Then you'll get a really good start with this book, whether you're new to ASP.NET or you have worked with an earlier version. Like so many books, the first part goes through some very basic stuff, like using Visual Studio, but it's easy to skip that part if you don't need it; after all it's just the first 100 pages out of a total of more than 1600 pages packed with information. The table of contents is 25 pages long, so you can imagine how many topics are covered in this book. If you have worked with ASP.NET before, you may like that some chapters contains a "Changed in ASP.NET 4" section that highlights changes to earlier versions of ASP.NET.
The book is very well written and there is a good flow in the topics. Even though there is some basic stuff in the book, you need to have some programming skills and knowledge of VB.NET and the .NET Framework before you dig into this. Most, if not all, areas of ASP.NET 4 are covered and you'll also find that a lot of other topics like ADO.NET, LINQ, and XML etc. are covered as well. The book is divided in five parts and I am delighted to find that a whole part is dedicated to securing you web site with the ASP.NET security model and topics like Authentication, Authorization, Roles and Cryptography. With the Internet today you can hardly imagine publishing a web site without being worried about its security. The book is also an excellent reference that you'll probably keep returning to; at least I know I will. I recommend this book to both beginner and experienced ASP.NET developers.

I bought this book as to learn about what ASP.Net can does. I have years of programming for Windows and before that DOS and Mainframes. I found this book covered a lot of material and did it in a way that made me realize how ASP.Net works.
Like any book I though some sections had too much detail about things that seemed simple and other sections could have used more detail. This is most likely due to my background and not any failing in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone needed to learn how ASP.Net works.

I would have given this 5 stars but the fact this is just a translation of the C# book is all to obvious. You even find semi-colons in the code samples, one example even had Using System.blah in it. The books in this series give good coverage to many topics but this time around some important to me things seem to have been left completely out. In VS 2010 MS now supports jQuery, no mention in the book. I don't expect much coverage, but no mention? WCF receives minimal coverage despite being introduced in version 3.5 (and not covered in that version of this book either). The only AJAX is the chapter from the 3.5 book using the built in MS AJAX controls. Again the book is worth buying but Matt, when the next version of VS comes out please consider taking the time to actually write a new book on the subject there have been enough changes and additions since version 2.0 to merit a complete rewrite.
