5.0 out of 5 stars Read/Practice/Execute and you will improve your game, March 13, 2000
This review is from: The Pro Approach (Spiral-bound)
I read this book 2 or 3 times the first week after I received it. After being in a slump for several weeks, the book seemed to get me back on track. It inabled me to learn more about my particular style in conjunction with where I should stand and throw. The mathmatical approach has benefitted my game a great deal. In addition, the description of the 8 typical lane conditions and how to adjust to them is invaluable. The main thing I learned, the fun is in the journey. Concentrate on execution and the scores will come. Where before, I was worried more about getting strikes. Also, the information on tracking lanes helped me focus more on me than what the lanes were doing. If you can't execute and hit your marks, then the scores will not come. It helped me become honest with myself and to practice better execution. It's not the lanes, it's the attitude and adjustment abilities. Over the last two weeks, I've averaged right at 225. My league average before the book is right at 200 and now I'm making a run to improve. The first week I shot 608. The second week I shot 737. It is definately worth buying if you are serious about pushing your game to another level

5.0 out of 5 stars Pro's secrets of adjusting to lanes revealed!, June 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Pro Approach (Spiral-bound)
"The Pro Approach" is a unique and wonderful book. There are lots of bowling books on the market that deal with the physical game, but this is the only book I've ever seen that unveils the secrets of how a professional bowler reads and attacks a lane condition.

Mathews has managed to turn an art few could ever hope to master into a science that any intelligent player can understand.

The "Pro Approach" gives the bowler a complete systematic arsenal of adjustments that should help any 170+ bowler improve his game.

Mathews' book has a chart in it that is worth the entire price of the book by itself. The chart allows a bowler to quickly and confidently find the strike line based off what they left on the previous shot. He also provides a couple of handy systems for shooting spares.

(I can't wait to get all the adjustments memorized. I have been amazed at how well these adjustments work when I have taken his book to my practice sessions.)

In addition to the adjustments chart, "The Pro Approach" gives useful guidelines on the 8 basic lane conditions and includes sections on the mental game, practice, equipment, setting up an arsenal, etc.

The sections that deal with bowling balls are somewhat out of date because of their emphasis on static balance and their failure to address Proactive ball technology, but this book is still an absolute must for any serious bowler's library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for bowlers wishing to reach higher plateaus., November 17, 1999
This review is from: The Pro Approach (Spiral-bound)
Larry Matthews has put together a very concise easily understood book covering the sport of bowling. The book covers adjusting to lane conditions very well. This is one of the areas that is particularly hard for aspiring keglers. I personally have averaged over 200 for the past 20+ years, have shot many honor scores, and agree with Larry's bowling philosophy. One negative, on this great book . . . it needs an update on equipment. It doesn't cover the proactive, particle balls of the present era.
