Review of Pro/Engineer Tutorial Release 2000i2,
By JOSEPH D ORNDORFF (Baltimore, MD United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pro/ENGINEER Tutorial (Release 2000i-2) & MultiMedia CD (Paperback)
I am a new user to Pro-E. My only past experience in 3-D modeling was using AutoDesks's Mechanical Desktop.I found Toogood's tutorial to be just the ticket I needed to come up to speed quickly on how to use the major features of the software. The tutorial is very well organized and concise. I have now compledted about 75% of the lessons and feel that I can be productive at desiging complicated parts. Toogood does an outstanding job of identifing certain caveats in the program at just the right time in the lessons. Don't let the realitively small page count of the book fool you, it is packed with usefull information without a lot of elementry windows stuff and hand holding. The book is extreamly accurate when it outlays Pro-E commands and what the expected response will be. My only criticism is that there are no color pictures. Since Pro-E has the capabiltiy to generate stunning shaded images it would have added greatly to the text. Color would also add some clarity since Pro-E uses specific colors to relay axis position and datum relationship information e.g. yellow is positive red is negative. I would highly reccommend this book to anyone who is familiar with general mechanical design principles and is looking to quickly come up to seed with Pro-e 2000i2.

Not worth the money...,
By Yuri Kuzyk (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pro/ENGINEER Tutorial (Release 20/2000i) (A Click by Click Primer) and MultiMedia CD (Paperback)
This book was really meant as a textbook for Toogood's class in CAD, given at the University of Alberta. As such, it is really apparent that he took his hand-written overheads and just typed them out in book format; that is, this book is not much help to those with real questions about Pro/E.The lessons will be familiar to anyone who has taken the three-day course from either PTC or Rand - your binders have a lot more information than this book! The book is made even worse by the fact that there is no index; in this day of simply clicking the mouse to create an index this oversight is not forgiveable. Toogood does not give any details on many of the more fundamental issues associated with Pro/E such as ensuring that the config.pro file is set correctly. There is also very little information on working on anything more complicated than basic models since the sections on drawings and assemblies are very weak. The cd that comes with the book is not very good either; that is, if you can even view it. It should be in some other software and/or format since both of my computers come back with errors about "low system resources" when I try to run the program. In the end I had to find a rather old pc in order to run the disk. If you are the type of person who learns from listening to a disembodied voice drone on while an animated mouse points and clicks through Pro/E's many menus then this is the cd for you! For the rest of us, I'd suggest spending your money on the PTC manuals or else taking one of the official courses. Considering the price of this book you are not getting your money's worth!

An excellent introduction to Pro/Engineer,
By A Customer
This review is from: Pro/ENGINEER Tutorial (Release 20) (Paperback)
I am a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of New Hampshire. I used this book to introduce a Freshman level design course to the use of Pro/Engineer. I had looked at most of the other Pro/Engineer books offerred by Amazon and selected this one based on its thoughtful step-by-step approach. The reaction from the 52 students in the class was extremely positive and they were able to progress through the ten lessons at the rate of about one per week.Because the author, Toogood, has experience in teaching this material to his own students he correctly anticipates where they are likely to be confused or make mistakes. The text is very good at anticipating these pitfalls and explaining how to avoid them. I also used the text as the basis for a "short course" taught to upper level undergraduates. We were able to progress through the material at the rate of two lessons per day, making the ten lessons fit nicely into a one week course. Overall, this is an excellent introduction to a powerful CAD package and I recommend it highly.

This book is very thorough, and easy to understand,

This review is from: Pro/ENGINEER Tutorial (Release 18/19) (Paperback)
This book is an excellent beginners guide to the field of 3D-modelling with Pro/E. It takes you through most of the basic features, and some of the more advanced ones, in 10 step by step easy to follow lessons. After completing this book you will be able to model fairly complex assembly's, and presenting them in a professional way, ready for for fabrication.

Excellent Tutorial Book,

I just started using ProE at work and this book was very helpful in teaching me the fundamentals of Pro-E 2000i2. The click by click examples are easy to follow. The book shows you the most common commands that you'll use when you start designing your first parts. I recommend you practice some of the projects in this book before you take the week long "Fundamentals of Pro Engineer" course offered by PTC. The fast paced course can become very frustrating if you are completely new to ProE. This book also has very few text errors. The book's CD demonstrations are also helpful. Overall, I am very satisfied with my first ProE book.

I wish this book had been out when we chose textbooks.,

I was a TA teaching ProENGINEER with a different book, and looked at several others when considering changing books. (We were not happy with the one we had, which was the first one available for 20, so we didn't have much choice at the time.) This is the book I recommended that the course change to - I felt it was well organized and thought out, and would be a good reference after the course was over.

Maybe as an indroduction this book and its advanced brother would be useful as a free website recsource. However, when you consider the price they are not to impressive.... keep your money for a referance book (with an index) such as "Pro/Engineer Tips and Techniques", "Advanced Tips, Techniques and Work-arounds" or probably any other title.

My experience with this book.,

I have had the experience with CAD tools such as AutoCAD and SDRC I-DEAS, but I had no experience with Pro/E. So I bought this book to teach myself how to use Pro/E. This book is pretty easy for me to follow. I spent average 3 or 4 hours on each lesson. I didn't do the exercises in each lesson though(I am busy with other things too). Still, after going through the texts, I am confident to make drawings for production. Although my previous CAD experience might have helped me, I still think this book is very good for people who start to use Pro/E: basic topics are covered, which are enough to enable you to make models or drawings for fabrication. Just my 2 cents.

A Decent Tutorial,
By A Customer
This review is from: Pro/ENGINEER Tutorial (Release 20/2000i) (A Click by Click Primer) and MultiMedia CD (Paperback)
This tutorial was used in my engineering design course. It is okay as far as CAD tutorials go. The text is confusing to follow at times. I would be hesitant to recommend it to fellow students.

THINKING required here, not just a list of steps to follow.,

This review is from: Pro/ENGINEER Tutorial (Release 20) (Paperback)
Well written and understandable tutorial accurately updated for the latest version of Pro/E. Excellent presentation of the reasoning behind the detailed steps required to run Pro/E. Good examples used in each lesson followed by a checklist testing reader understanding. A challenging assembly project is included that is made up of parts created in each lesson.
