4.0 out of 5 stars Great construction, sturdy
Bought a 15+ foot canoe and needed a way to transport it. Found this carrier on Amazon for a good price so figured what the heck. Arrived a day early.
Pros: 1. Easy assembly once the feet are mounted.
2. Very sturdy. Can rock the bed without the rack moving a bit.
3. Looks like factory equipment.
Cons: 1. Mounting the feet took some...

2.0 out of 5 stars didnt work for my 1997 dodge
Purchased this as an inexpensive way to lug a 24ft ladder around on my short bed 1997 Dodge Ram 2500. Package arrived with a large hole out of which the mounting bolts escaped. The set screws used to secure the pipe sections were in place save two, so off to Ace Hardware I went. $20 in bolts and set screws later, I began drilling into my virgin bed rails. Got the...

Cons: 1. Mounting the feet took some customization.
a. Had to drill new holes in the feet and the bed lip for all mounts.
b. Had to do some minor sheet metal bending to have enough room for the bolts.
i. Not the products issue, the 2010 F-150 bed lip is very narrow (one side was 3/8 inch wider than the other)
c. If you have a drill press use it for drilling the holes in the feet.
i. You will need a 7/16ths drill bit. 3/8ths is not big enough. 13/32nds would be even better.
d. If your holes in the bed lip will go into single wall sheet metal you may consider using a 1" wide piece of iron or steel, painted, to reinforce the bed lip. I did not not.
e. Had to remove the bed tie down points and the bed liner in order to have access to the bolts.

It took about 2 hours to install.
Spray Paint the underside of the bed lip where the holes are drilled
Remove all the metal shards
Two people makes it go easier.

I had to drill holes into my truck to secure the racks, no problem. I use those racks for transporting our Kayaks.

I bought this rack to carry a canoe on my 2007 Ford F150. None of the pre-drilled holes in the mounting plates lined up with the accessible lip on the bedrails of my truck, so I had to drill new holes in the rack mounting plates, which are about 1/8" thick steel. This took a while but was not complicated. Once done, I clamped the racks in place on the truck, drilled mounting holes in the truck and installed the bolts with no trouble. I haven't loaded anything on the racks yet, but I can do chin-ups on them and they seem really sturdy and don't even wiggle -- very strong (I weight 180 lb). So I'm very happy with the racks. They were a very good deal at the low price, especially with free shipping.

The set screws used to secure the pipe sections were in place save two, so off to Ace Hardware I went. $20 in bolts and set screws later, I began drilling into my virgin bed rails. Got the first front vertical riser drilled, and when I tightened it down, noticed that it did not stand vertically, but rather angled dramatically outward from the bed. I did not want to go through the process of shimming all four extensions so sent an RMA into Amazon. Was returned with no problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great., November 1, 2010

Compared to all the other truck/ladder racks, this seemed like a good buy for $105. I knew I wasn't going to get back into my garage with the rack attached, and I wasn't real keen on drilling holes in my truck sides. But I was pretty sure I could just temporarily clamp it on with some C-clamps, since it seemed there was enough under-side-rail clearance for them. Well, it worked out great. Takes less than 10 minutes to attach. I carried 25 pieces of treated 16 foot long decking with only the slightest front-to-back wobble over some poorly surfaced highway. Extremely sturdy side to side after tightening all set screws. Definitely worth it (assuming you have 8 3" C-clamps sitting around).

I received the racks today and I was surprised that there were two racks in the box. For $100, I really though that I am going to get only one. However, they were scratched all over so I probably need to ask a friend of mine to repaint them for me. Also, trying to find a way to install them without drilling holes (I may need to redesign the racks). Other than that they look very strong and cannot wait to see them on my truck. (I will use them to transport a 14in kayak on a 1998 Toyota Tacoma).

1.0 out of 5 stars Rust and Weak, November 12, 2010
This review is from: Pro-Series HTCARG 500 lb Cargo Truck Rack (Automotive)
This item does not last. No wonder it's cheap. After one winter, the rust grows and it won't hold anything. I am worried that it will break while i am driving and end up dropping the ladder on the highway. I am not going to take the risk of causing mass traffic because i want to save few bucks... Have changed to Kargo Master brandtr instead.

We needed a rack for our canoe, and racks marketed for recreation are expensive. This rack was a sweet deal, and is sturdy enough to carry two canoes for a shuttle. Plus, we got free super-saver shipping. Yeah!

4.0 out of 5 stars Parts missing, January 27, 2012

This review is from: Pro-Series HTCARG 500 lb Cargo Truck Rack (Automotive)
I ordered this rack and recieved it as promised (which is more than I can say about other items ordered at the same time). I have not mounted it yet, but for the money, it looks to be relatively solid and will suit my purpose with no problem. I read the previous reviews before ordering so I was not surprised to find the rack was scratched in several places (minor scratches). I had already bought primer and paint to repaint the rack anyway. I also was not surprised to find bolts and nuts missing. (5 bolts and 4 nuts missing. It had plenty of washers though) The box it arrived in was in tact (although not eough packing to prevent scratching) and the packages with the nuts and bolts was sealed. These did not fall out. Instead, someone in shipping cannot count to 12.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product for the money, November 3, 2011

The hardest part of installation was moving my tool box out of the way and putting it back on. Seriously, so I had to drill a couple of holes; some people have had issues with that. What the heck did you think, it would just magically adhere itself to your truck bed! At this time I chose to only install the front one, allowing me to carry a ladder over the tailgate without damaging my roof.

Because I also have a toolbox I used carriage bolts instead of the bolts provided by the manufacturer. This allowed me to set my toolbox back on with minimal difference in height. The bolts they sent were of fine quality, but the carriage bolts have a smooth, rounded head and a lower profile.

Pretty solid, I think I will ad some eye-hooks to it to attach security cables or chains to. Don't want to come out of Home Depot and find some thug stealing my ladder. It is just painted or powder coated steel so I expect that I will have to spray paint them every year or two to keep the scratches from rusting. But what the heck, the closest other product here was four times as much money!

Buy it! If your uptight about having to drill a couple of holes; you probably don't need to be hauling a ladder anyway!
