Your Performance tuning and monitoring Bible,
By
This review is from: Pro Java EE 5 Performance Management and Optimization (Hardcover)
This is a one of a kind book. It is the only one that discusses performance maintenance and optimization for all your Java EE applications, from code to servers.
The first section covers processes that you need to have in the full lifecycle of your application. Starting monitoring and performance tuning early on in the process to make it easier to keep your app performing at its best. The second part covers performance tuning, where to best tune your application for the biggest bang for your buck, from the JVM, first place to tune, to your pooling and other configurations. The third part covers tuning your production environment, which should be easy, as long as you have statistics already from your development to test server load balancing. And finally the last part has tips and tricks. For just the 10 pages on JVM Heap/Garbage Collection and tuning alone is worth the price of the book. This book should be your single source of performance tuning and monitoring for all Java EE Applications. It is your bible on performance.

The book for JEE application performance management,

This review is from: Pro Java EE 5 Performance Management and Optimization (Hardcover)
This is "the" book for those interested in performance management (and tuning) of JEE applications. Several important items like capacity assessment, scalability, instrumentation, load tests and resource usage metrics are dealt in detail, apart from the core aspects about performance. The author's emphasis about correlation of performance metrics in evaluating an enterprise application, is just awesome. Copious code chunks help drive home the concepts. IBM's "funnel effect" paradigm (for tuning JEE threads and queues), is presented nicely here as Wait-based tuning.

Really liked the book. Contains tons of valuable advices on how to approach not only current Java performance problems but also on how to protect your systems against future changes in usage patterns. The chapter on wait-based tuning approach is a gem IMO, and so is the last chapter that acts as a cheat sheet for the most commonly observed performance related problems in Java EE environments. Highly recommended to anyone interested in making sure their software systems are tuned and in good shapes, and especially to those whose systems are not.

not a bad book. I would like to see updated tuning info with app server versions and jdk/j2se versions and sun hotspot vm vs ibm j9 tuning stuff too

This book is an invaluable resource for any Java EE architect, or sysadmin working in this environment. It exposes in great detail all aspects of performance tuning and management, providing excellent advice on how to plan, develop and monitor your applications ensuring that they perform as expected.
My favorite parts are the authors approach to application server configuration and JVM heap tuning. A lot of examples with great expert advice, definitely worth it! |
