You don't need this kit. A plastic zip-lock bag and an envelope work just as well. There are many labs that you can choose from for testing for asbestos. An internet search with "Western Analytical" will turn up one that offers a turnaround time of just 1 or 2 days. Their cost for testing is competitive with the cost you are charged by this pro-kit, except you won't be paying for the kit and waiting on the kit to arrive before collecting your samples. Their site also has detailed instructions on sample size and how to collect it safely.

If you are concerned about the competence of a laboratory for testing, you can go to the government site:[...] which provides a directory of accredited labs.

I'd be a lot more inclined to give this a positive review, if the price tag on the kit included the additional cost you are charged for testing the sample. Even if the price was higher, like say $30. As it is, I can't see paying nine bucks for a bag that costs 20 cents, and instructions I can get for free off the internet.

Our family room has "popcorn" ceiling paint, which I wanted to remove (not hard, just very messy and time consuming!). As our house was built in '78, and we had no idea when the paint was applied, as we're the second owners, and there was still some asbestos-containing paint around during the late 70's, I needed to test. In comes this kit. I picked it up at a local ACE Hardware for $11 (about the same as the Amazon plus shipping). Yes, indeed, it's a pretty cheap little "kit" - some plastic gloves, a ziplock baggie and the order form, basically. Probably cost 25 cents to put together. But, since I couldn't find any testing locally for $41, I looked at the bottom line - this came out (despite the cheap kit) as the least expensive way to buy what I needed - an asbestos test. The outside of the package is very clearly marked as to the additional $30 "test fee" (again, just look at the TRUE test fee as $41, and you won't perhaps feel so disappointed), so there really wasn't any "surprise." I collected the sample on Sunday evening, mailed it Monday morning, and on Thursday (all in the same week) I had an email with my results! I'd researched the lab itself, and it seemed reliable and legitimate. Personally, I felt that the results were quite easy to understand. Listed are four analysis groups - a series of asbestos fibers, non-asbestos fibers, non-fibrous materials (such as vermiculite, mica, perlite, styrofoam) and an "other" category, which includes aluminum, bitumen, glue and "binders" which includes paint (which accounted for the vast majority of my sample).Read more ›

This product is a simple plastic bag, you have to pay the same lab fee regardless of purchasing this or not. This is capitalism at its worst and is a disgrace to Amazon.com; should be take down immediately.

This company never followed through on the analysis. I sent in a sample more than 3 weeks ago, and we have heard nothing back. Therefore, we received no service for the money. They do not respond to my e-mails.

Don't bother with kit, just send in a little baggy of he popcorn with return address and such on it. Lab fee is actually $30.00. Test kit is just a gimic to get your hard earned cash. When I figured it out I just chucked it.

What they don't tell you about this kit is that you have to mail in a sample AND another $30... Now you know.

This item do nothing. You never test your asbestos. There is NO test kit inside. What is inside of packet is just plastic bag and plastic globe. After putting your ceiling sample in the plastic bag, you must send the sample to the lab to get the result, which need additional $30 cost. This item deceive you. In my life, I haven't left review because I just don't spend my energy for it, but now really DO review because I feel I must let people know the truth of this item.

Are you kidding me. Do not buy

This "kit" and i assure you i use that term lightly, is a plastic bag that says asbestos sample on it.
You can not actually do the test your self. In fact to add insult to injury once you have your sample they want you to mail it to them with a payment of 30$ per sample and an additional 15 if you want express processing. What a waste.

Let me give you all some advise Avoid this product at all costs. Unless your in to wasting money and in that case feel free to send me 12$ and ill just send you a zip-lock bag and their address. Ill even splurge and send it postage paid to you.

I did give one star for the company sending it to me as promised. This rating dose not reflect their service.
