Book Description

April 9, 2007

The open source NetBeans Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is a Java IDE project started by Sun, which has gained tremendous market interest and momentum of late, and is closing the gap between itself and the most popular, leading open source Java IDE, Eclipse.

Pro NetBeans aims to publish on the NetBeans Java IDE, a market that is now underrepresented in the marketplace, unlike the near saturation of Eclipse books. Specifically, this book aims to be first to market on the new NetBeans 5.5 Java IDE, based on the relatively new Java EE 5 platform and J2SE 5.

Intended for Java developers of varying skill who may or may not be familiar with Netbeans IDE or Java IDEs in general. Netbeans IDE is an amazing tool for rapidly developing Java applications.

Editorial Reviews

Review

From the reviews:

"NetBeans is a Java development tool with support for enterprise applications (including Web access, Web services, and database persistence). … the book provides 18 chapters of step-by-step examples, with supporting screen shots and some code snippets. … For students just learning about enterprise applications, the text will serve as an excellent self-paced guide to using the IDE … ." (W. Hankley, ACM Computing Reviews, Vol. 49 (12), December, 2008)

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book by Adam Myatt, June 6, 2007
This review is from: Pro NetBeans IDE 5.5 Enterprise Edition (Paperback)
A very well written book providing practical examples instead of long-winded complex explanations. Being a beginner in Netbeans, I thought this book might have been beyond me, but it caters for the beginners as well as the experts.

I especially liked the inclusion of shortcut keys to help cut down thoughs maindane repetitive tasks. The screen shots helped support the detailed explanations and by the end of the day I was building my own projects and having fun!

I wanted an environment that's out-of-the-box to do all that server 'stuff' for me so I could just get coding. Netbeans is perfect and with the help of this book, it wasn't long before I was up and running.

BUY IT!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Too basic. Not very helpful., January 17, 2008
This review is from: Pro NetBeans IDE 5.5 Enterprise Edition (Paperback)
At work, I was tasked with importing my project into NetBeans and expected this book to give helpful insights and explain tricky configuration issues. Instead, it was primarily a beginner's tutorial; like how to change fonts or create a new project. That sort of stuff should be evident and straightforward to any developer just by using NetBeans. I was looking for information on how to import free-form projects and how to configure my project and NetBeans to best utilize its functionality. For these advanced topics, "Pro" topics, if you will, this book is lacking.

In summary, save your money and buy the "NetBeans IDE Field Guide, 2nd ed" (ISBN: 0132395525) if you want something more than a shallow beginner's tutorial.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, July 7, 2007

In general it is a good book, but if you are looking for a book to help out with the great GUI form editing of Matisse, this book is not for you. Ironically in the opener the author speaks of how impressive the GUI builder is but the book lacks any substance on this matter.
