Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Speedminton

Speedminton

Speedminton, a new dimension in racquet sports, combines tennis, badminton, and racquetball and is endorsed by 2006 U.S. Open Champion Maria Sharapova. Easy to learn for beginners and fun for many advanced players, this game can be played anywhere by using the dimensions of a tennis court (although you don't need a net to play). It's fun and portable like badminton, aerobic and competitive like racquetball, and fun for the whole family.

Three Types of Play:

  • Fun Speeder can be used by beginners or for recreational volleys on the beach or in a park.
  • Match Speeder is for fast and competitive play.
  • Night Speeder is modified so that a Speedlight can be inserted at the base.

Rules:

A game is played to 16 points. Serve from the center of your playing field and players alternate service every three points. Play best-of-five to win a match.

Speedminton Games

Freestyle
No court, no rules, and no limits. From a recreational game at the beach to an exciting volley in total darkness, you can just play without keeping score. If it's windy, simply snap a wind ring onto the Speeder for added stability.
Outdoor Competition
Use Easy Courts to set up a game at the beach or on grassy fields. You can also use cones to turn any open space or a tennis court into two Speed Courts.
Indoor Competition
You can easily set up a game at any gym or indoor tennis court. No net is required--just mark your boundaries with the Easy Court or cones and you're ready to play.
Night Play
The Night Speeder makes it possible to play at night. Just press a Speedlight into the clear Night Speeder head to let it glow in the dark (they glow 2-3 hours).

This is truly a fun family game. All ages can easily play together -- we were playing two on two with 9 and 10 year olds against adults. It is worth every penny and I love that you can play it anywhere.

One potential problem I see is the cone markers. I have an older version that has sand bags connected by strings so your court is always the correct size, so I can't say how easy the cones are to set up in the right dimensions. I don't know why they got rid of the sand bags and strings -- this was a great way to set up the court so you know exactly where the inbound line is.

Overall -- hours of fun for the whole family.

The game is definitely fun, especially if you play it on a tennis court. The birdie is smaller and flies faster than in traditional badminton games. Hitting the birdie and directing it to the right spot is easier than I anticipated, especially considering the small size of the racket. Once the game gets going, the enjoyment level is fairly high, but falls short of the promised thrill in the product promo texts. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is that, in spite of all the hype and promises, the game is far from being wind resistant. A little better than badminton, but still can be ruined by anything stronger than a breeze. The "wind ring" is ineffective, feels more like a placebo.

Overall, if you paid under $30 for this set, you probably are going to get your money's worth out of playing it. Try it, and expect it to be a fast version of badminton.

We tried the Speedminton game over the holidays and thought it was lots of fun. Unlike badminton, the birdie is more sturdy and flies more accurately. The racquets are more like racquetball racquets and are also very sturdy. We were impressed that we could play the game at the very breezy beachside, with a few minor adjustments to our swing. Also, since the racquets are not too heavy, there was no arm fatigue. We've played Smashball at the beach for years, and when we picked up those paddles to play (after playing Speedminton) we thought they felt heavy and awkward. We will have years of fun with this game.

My 8-year old son and I have had this game for nearly three years now and have not grown tired of it. Considering the use our set has been put to (we play nearly every day in the summer months), it has held up remarkably well. I am surprised to read of another reviewer's report that the all of the birdies in the set fell apart within the first day of use. Although we have lost a few birdies to the bamboo forest behind our property, we have lost none due to quality issues. In fact, we still have (and use) a birdie that came with our original set. We have gotten so much enjoyment from this game that I have just ordered a second set so we can have 4-player games.

This game is so much fun ,and I can play it with my 11-17 yr old children . The only draw back is that you need an open area preferably free of trees. Because the birdie goes much higher than a traditional badmitton set, but that's the fun of it.

This is a great game. I've been playing regular badminton for a long time and this is definitely much more fun and a better cardio workout. The only drawback is poor workmanship of the rackets. The plastic tape covering the handles started to come loose after only a few games and soon came off completely, turning the racket handles into a gluey mess. I fixed the problem by removing the original tape and replacing it with the replacement tape for tennis rackets.

I am a big fan of tennis and badminton and this game is a little of both. Fun, fast and addicting! My 10 year old son loves to play since there is no net. Really helps teach eye hand coordination. I love this game so much I am buying a set for my brither and his son to play.

We opened the set and started out great, But in one Afternoon all of the Birdies or "Speeders" fell apart. I have emailed the manufacturer and hopefuly they will come up with a tougher design.
