3.0 out of 5 stars Poor technical review of Chapter 2 September 19, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Unfortunately the first substantial coding example (Chapter 2, the ssh module) is riddled with errors. Do yourself a favor and download / get the errata BEFORE reading the chapter as it clearly highlights several problems with the example. (The errata is here: https://github.com/pro-puppet/pro-puppet-errata/blob/master/ch02/errors.txt).

It's a shame that whomever did the technical review for Chapter 2 didn't catch these before publication as they are highly confusing and misleading. The inconsistency between using the install and package classes is maddening.

Back in 2013, when Puppet 2.3 was released, the second edition of Pro Puppet made it to the shelves, targeting a very limited number of professional looking for whatever they couldn’t find neither on the (excellent) official documentation nor through some frantic googling. This book is the joint effort of names that should sound familiar to anyone into automation as well as into containers. This group thing resulted in a collection of precious insights but also of different writing styles that make it hard for the user to follow.

I am not aware of the contribution of each of the authors. What’s certain is that what the reader holds in his hands is something that feels like a work in progress, an early preview that did not pass through proofreading yet, rather than the final product. It’s not just because of the horde of typos lurking through the pages, nor because of the terminal’s standard output brutally copied/pasted without any mercy, covering entire pages. It’s mainly because of the feeling of disorganization that the books gives you, hopping from topic to topic without a smooth flow.

As the title suggests, Pro Puppet is for professionals, experienced puppetteers that know their way through modules, externam node configurations and environments. The depth of the topics covered, summed up with the overall chaotic organization of the book, would deliver a strong blow to the beginner’s hopes to learn Puppet.

Once the aforementioned details are crystal clear, I must admin that Pro Puppet delivers a lot to the brave reader that is not scared to get through it. While a beginners guide show how to install and get an agent talking to the master, here the authors discuss different master/agents scenarios, as well as the masterless option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book February 10, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I read the first edition of this book and enjoyed it, and have found the second edition an even better resource. The second edition has brought in many useful updates to keep up with the rapidly-changing puppet ecosystem. The book is written clearly and teaches how a puppet newbie can get a successfully running puppet 3.x environment up and running, and also has plenty for the experienced puppet user to learn (eg scaling puppet, best practices, hiera).

The gold standard in puppet books, highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Improvements in new book version March 26, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Pro Puppet is fairly comprehensive and provides improvements on the earlier version. The chapter on Hiera is greatly appreciated. I would have liked to see some sections with a little more depth such as environments and git, but I realize there's only so many pages. Overall, good read and I would recommend to somebody starting out.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to date. February 19, 2015
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The version of the book I received was not for the latest version of Puppet, and did not contain any version information. None of the examples would actually work in test. While the principles of Puppet were still usable, the examples were not. Visiting the Puppet website can give you the command definitions and it is possible to kind of understand what the author intends; but I wouldn't buy the book again.

This book was great! Good examples of usable configurations. This book now sits on my shelf as a reference for my Puppet deployment. I like the architecture discussed as well for larger deployments. Load balancing, all that. A solid book for any System Administrator.

2.0 out of 5 stars As Dominic Delmolino wrote in his comment, chapter 2 ... November 23, 2014
Format:Paperback
As Dominic Delmolino wrote in his comment, chapter 2 is a total mess. Even the source code on git hub is wrong and does not reflect the final version.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad if you can get past the typos November 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It's full of typos, but presents a decent overview of Puppet in its current state.
