3.0 out of 5 stars Poor technical review of Chapter 2 September 19, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Unfortunately the first substantial coding example (Chapter 2, the ssh module) is riddled with errors. Do yourself a favor and download / get the errata BEFORE reading the chapter as it clearly highlights several problems with the example. (The errata is here:

It's a shame that whomever did the technical review for Chapter 2 didn't catch these before publication as they are highly confusing and misleading. The inconsistency between using the install and package classes is maddening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book February 10, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I read the first edition of this book and enjoyed it, and have found the second edition an even better resource. The second edition has brought in many useful updates to keep up with the rapidly-changing puppet ecosystem. The book is written clearly and teaches how a puppet newbie can get a successfully running puppet 3.x environment up and running, and also has plenty for the experienced puppet user to learn (eg scaling puppet, best practices, hiera).

The gold standard in puppet books, highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars As Dominic Delmolino wrote in his comment, chapter 2 ... November 23, 2014
As Dominic Delmolino wrote in his comment, chapter 2 is a total mess. Even the source code on git hub is wrong and does not reflect the final version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Improvements in new book version March 26, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Pro Puppet is fairly comprehensive and provides improvements on the earlier version. The chapter on Hiera is greatly appreciated. I would have liked to see some sections with a little more depth such as environments and git, but I realize there's only so many pages. Overall, good read and I would recommend to somebody starting out.

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It's full of typos, but presents a decent overview of Puppet in its current state.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poorly written March 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book would be VERY helpful but it's like whole sections of explanation are missing!! The Class names and file names are interchanged you're never really sure what platform the author(s) are working from or if they even talked to one another. Where was the editor, they should be fired.
I wish I had paid attention to the other reviewer before wasting my money on this book. Being new to puppet, this book will leave you confused, and you will NOT get apache running using the directions provided. The so-called example code from the site is even worse, it only goes to chapter 3.
Please DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. I'm working on getting my money back.
