About the Author

Brian Paulen co-founded Madrona Solutions Group in July of 2005. He has overall responsibility for the firm's growing business and for managing client and partner relationships. Additionally, Brian works to ensure that Madrona can offer an exciting and challenging environment for its employees. He has extensive project and program management experience, and is an expert in delivering strategic sales and marketing solutions. Prior to founding Madrona Solutions, Brian was the Director of the CRM practice at Two Degrees Consulting. There, he had overall responsibility for sales and client delivery of CRM solutions. Earlier, Brian was a member of the CRM team at Equarius (now Interlink Group), working primarily with clients in the Pacific Northwest. His career began at Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting), working out of their New York office. Brian holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and International Business from Lehigh University.

Jeff Finken co-founded Madrona Solutions Group in July of 2005, and brings years of experience to his role as Director of Madrona's Business Intelligence practice. He brings a particular focus on working with Sales, Marketing, and IT leaders to define Key Performance Indicators that drive improved organizational performance.  Prior to joining Madrona, Jeff led and delivered Business Intelligence projects while at Deloitte Consulting and Onyx Software. Specific clients have included Microsoft, Paccar, Pemco, Expedia, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

I referred to this book while doing a prototype in building a Sales dashboard for a company. It gave me a jump start in using Microsoft technologies to come up with a dashboard in a short time. To be honest this is the first book I am referring to on this task. Especially I liked the case studies chapter at the end of the book to be very helpful. The chapters provide covers well on details around SQL Server analytics but I was looking for examples in each chapter to get me though. But this book solved it's purpose for me.
I will recommend this book to other like me who want to start working on dashboards and analytics using SQL Server tools.

I was hoping that this book would provide some architectural topics such as data structures and strategies for reporting but it came up short. This doesn't mean the book is not worth reading though. It does cover using basics of SSAS and dashboards but is far from a pro book.

the case studies were a good read and I liked the chapter that covered connecting excel to Google analytics as it covered some interesting scenarios but again, it was too elementary.

I would recommend this book only to those who are new to analytics and dashboard but even still I would recommend supplementing with other material or finding another book altogether.
