4.0 out of 5 stars New features for sql server 2005 but not pro

3.0 out of 5 stars A medium-value overview of SqlServer 2005
This book is a medium-value overview of the SqlServer 2005 new features. The overview is complete but the book does not goes in depth as I expected. I also don't like the writing style that is not very clear (for instance the APPLY Statement explanation is really poor) and the exposition that mixes DBAs related topics with Developers-Related topics.

4.0 out of 5 stars New features for sql server 2005 but not pro, December 3, 2005
This review is from: Pro SQL Server 2005 (Paperback)
This books seems to be a list and quick summary of new features of sql server 2005. I like the fact that the authors do make an attempt to explain why the new features are present and how to use them. However I would not call it a professional book since it does not dive into depth in any one particular feature on how to take advantage of these features and how to implement something like it in a production environment. All we have is short demo samples which is good for explaining but not really helping the dba/developer integerate it with their existing systems and applications as seen in more advanced/architecture books.

I fell asleep a few times whilst going thru this book. It could do with alot more pictures too to keep the motivation going

A very good intro to sql server 2005 but you still going to need to buy a book for each topic/chapter on this book to be competent user since there simply isn't enough information/examples in it

If you're searching for a quick overview of all new topics this is a good starting point, but don't expect to became a SQL new features expert.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for, March 8, 2006
By
This review is from: Pro SQL Server 2005 (Paperback)
If you're looking for a "what's new in SQL Server 2005" this book covers that. If you're looking for a reference book on the product, that goes into how to configure or upgrade from an earlier version--Keep Looking.

The book explains new features in some detail. But, I want to know how to place the databases in a specific directory, how to set up replication--not mirroring; and how to install the software remotely. The book does not discuss any of that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference for Database Developers Moving to SQL 2005 From 2000, August 28, 2006
This review is from: Pro SQL Server 2005 (Paperback)
We have been heavy users (both as developers and administrators) of SQL Server 2000 since it came out in 2000. We were anxious to upgrade to SQL Server 2005 and did so in early 2006. For the first couple of months we largely utilized SQL 2005 in the same way that we had done with SQL 2000 (with the exception of using the new Management Studio) and did not really exploit the new features of SQL 2005. This book definitely opened our eyes to many of the new features of the SQL 2005 database and we are using many of those features in our current development efforts.

The Pro SQL Server 2005 book spent a significant amount of pages on process changes between 2000 and 2005 and then dove into the significant functional differences between the databases. As users of the Reporting Services features rolled out mid-stream in SQL 2000 we were very interested to read the coverage dedicated to it in this book. This book cannot serve as a comprehensive reference to all of the new features in SQL 2005 (there are entire volumes dedicated to each topic) and the authors did not attempt to. However, I felt like they did as good a job as was possible in such a concise manner.

I particularly enjoyed the section on the CLR embedded into SQL 2005 but wished that it could have been a bit longer. Overall, this is an excellent title and I encourage all database developers and administrators moving from SQL 2000 to check it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars overviews sans hype, January 3, 2006
By
M. Coughlin "Mike" (Westerly, RI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Pro SQL Server 2005 (Paperback)
If you're looking for a comprehensive overview of where SQL Server is going - withOUT the hype - this is it. Succinct examples of how & where to apply each feature are nicely done. Whole books are (and will be) devoted to some SQL Server 2005 features, like the new Reporting Services; but, most features need just a few sentences to frame the history and need ... plus an example application. This book gets you up to speed, quickly - without having to read a whole book on one of its chapters.

I'm not usually a fan of Wrox-style gang writing (assigning specialists to write chapters - presumably to get the book out, faster); but, this book is well done and edited. The chapter writers seem knowledgeable in their specialties and offer candid perspective, rather than just the 'party line' (which is MUCH appreciated).

For what it's worth, I don't think it's fair of (or approve of) reviewers being allowed to do things like the reviewer who posted ONE star, saying that s/he'll, now, start reading the book ... and, likely, never return to correct their bad rating. That ONE-start posting affects sales! A LOT of work (and family sacrifices) goes into these books and they have short lifecycles. I'm surprised that Amazon allows that sort of thing to go on ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Covers everything you want/need, December 5, 2005
This review is from: Pro SQL Server 2005 (Paperback)
With a product as big as SQL Server 2005, I didn't want to buy 10 different books to get a good understanding of what's in the product. This book hit the mark. I learned about the key technologies, how they work and best practices for my own deployment. As the role of SQL Server expands in our organization, I need to understand more than just the database aspects. This book is well worn already from my using it so extensively.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent SQL 2005 Coverage, February 26, 2006
This review is from: Pro SQL Server 2005 (Paperback)
This book does an awesome job of hitting everything that is new in SQL 2005. There is a lot to cover so it doesn't go into deep depth, but it does give you a good overview and points you in the right direction to find more information out on a particular topic by making sure you have a great introduction.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Pro SQL Server 2005 (Paperback)
This book has many examples of how to use the scripts to get your job done! It gives you an overview of the New SQL Server 2005. The book covers new features of SQL Server 2005 and gives very good examples to explain "How and why" to use different scripts. It is an eye opener and it points you to the right direction.

Overview of new Features of SQL Server 2005. Does not address non-new features at all. Even the new features is just overview level, I guess with BOL, who needs details?
