Quick overview for a very deep, complicated software program,
By Donald McLaren (Fullerton, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pro Tools LE 6 Ignite! (Paperback)
(...) I purchased Pro Tools LE 6 Ignite as it looked like I would get a quick briefing, an overview with enough depth to get the job done for me to understand the program. The very night before I was to use the M-Box I read sections of the book that I thought I needed to know. The read was easy; the graphics cut a lot of read time down. I was annoyed that parts of the graphics were so small that I wished I had a magnifying glass to better see menu items. The book was organized nicely for me to cherry pick what I needed to know. I did waste some time downloading the author's audio files as I determined that I did not need to use them. For some people the author's audio files will be nice to use. The next morning before the customers came into the recording booth; I downloaded music from a CD, Acid sound effects, and recorded my voice so I could put into practice what I read the night before. I was nervous when the first student walked in. I had the Ignite book with me and had to refer to it a couple of times but all three components worked wonderfully, M-Box, Pro Tools and Ignite. I was ecstatic that the book delivered what I thought it would. Actually I was very proud of my astute choice of books. I should not leave the reader with the impression that this book is going to give you any deep depth of understanding of the use of Pro Tools LE. The software is so wonderful that one can achieve product with a minimum of knowledge but the more you know leads to quicker and possibly better results. Ignite delivers to the reader a quick top down overview of the software to the point that you can put out product. I am a firm believer of buying multiple books for complicated software programs. I suggest you consider this book as being your first choice. This book should remove any beginning frustration a new user might have using Pro Tools LE and thus serve to keep more budding audio users in the Pro Tool camp.

Great Resource for the Novice and Amatuer,

This review is from: Pro Tools LE 7 Ignite!: The Visual Guide for New Users (Paperback)
I am brand new to the DAW (digital audio workstation) world. Pro Tools is my introduction into this complex and demanding source for recording audio. I always read the manuals that come with the product I buy to orient my self with it's functions and features. With Pro Tools the manual came in a whopping 700+ pages that was a useful but challenging read. I bought three user guides before I tried Andrew Lee Hagerman's Pro Tools LE 7 Ignite!. After completing the guide I feel more comfortable about navigating through the multiple features of Pro Tools. It was really helpful to have his downloaded sessions while traversing through the steps in the guide. Another great feature of his downloaded sessions were the finished sessions to compare your work with. While his guide does not include every possible property of Pro Tools he does offer a comprehensive introduction. The only area he admittedly omitted was the area of setting up your hardware for optimum efficiency. However, if you are looking to learn how to get through the basic steps to get a solid recording out of Pro Tools then this is a powerful guide to cope with the steep learning curve.

Not that good,
By A Customer
This review is from: Pro Tools LE 6 Ignite! (Paperback)
Author was in the right track, but just didn't write it very well. He tends to jump all over the place instead of focusing on one thing at a time. Shortcuts section in the back is very good though.

Great book if you want to learn step by step with lots of useful information to make your project much easier. I use it often for reference. It saved a lot of time when I am looking for "how to".
Recommended reference.

I'm currently on chapter 5 and have to say this is a great book if you're just starting out with Pro Tools. Some of the information is pretty basic in the beginning, but it really gives you a good grasp on what's going on. Plus the examples from the book are great practice and learning tools. I'll probably be looking for more of Mr. Hagerman's books when I'm finished with this one.

Pro Tools Ignite 7,

This review is from: Pro Tools LE 7 Ignite!: The Visual Guide for New Users (Paperback)
This is my favorite of the books I have seen for Pro Tools LE styled rig. There are a couple others and this one is easier to use. Quite straightforward. Every text seems to have its unique ways to show the reader some cool shortcuts and this one is no different. That point is neither here nor there really. Besides, if you just want the shortcuts I think Digidesign still prints a laminated sheet out for the consumer.
There, howver, is one forseeable problem with the Ignite series. The obvious issue that Digidesign moves its software versions so rapidly that you may easily buy a guide that will only be current for 4-6 months. I think there has been a Ignite 6.7 an Ignite 6.9 and now the Ignite 7.0. ...But hey, you gotta pick up the knowledge somehow and sometime. Plus the 7 Series is the way to go if you want to use the current "MIDI Track" configuration. A whole lot has changed since the days of "Pro Tools 6.-" This is a good book at an affordable price.

This review is from: Pro Tools LE 6 Ignite! (Paperback)
I needed the very very basics for working with ProTools and the price of this manual was just right so I did get out of it what I wanted. Sometimes the terminology (for a neophyte) wasn't too clear but it served its purpose for me.

Great written reference for less experienced users of ProTools LE. Descriptions and notated pictures help navigate the program extremely well. A terrific tool!
