I bought two of these for my kayaks. They work as advertised, but there are a couple of things to note:

The installation directions are not clear, but with some common sense, it can be installed safely. The recommended install method is to attach the lift to a 2x4 and attach the 2x4 to the ceiling. If you install the lift at a right angle to the studs in the ceiling, you will have to install it this way. We bought an 8 ft 2x4, lugs, and washers in addition to this kit for the installation. If installing using the 2x4 method, a second person and 2 ladders will be required. One person will have to hold the 2x4 up to the ceiling while the other uses a drill and lug to secure it to the ceiling.

Be very careful when raising/lowering your kayak. Practice with the locking mechanism so you know what angle to pull the rope to ensure it locks when you are not pulling the rope, and ensure that all objects and people are clear of the kayak in case you do not lock the rope correctly and the boat falls (my kayak fell about 4 ft on the first try). Once you get the hang of it, it works fine. I recommend installing the rope cleat above the reach of children.

To raise your boat high enough to walk or park a car under it, the straps will need to be shortened. The easiest way to do this is to rap one end of the strap around the hook until you have the desired length.

I cannot see paying $100 for other similar products. This will do the trick. If you have problems with the rope fraying, the rope can easily be replaced for a low cost at your local home improvement store.

This product is OK for the price. All parts were included, instructions were good, this system raises my kayak as claimed. If I did this again, I would consider paying a higher price for a higher quality system that might include ball bearings to reduce the high force needed to raise my 50 lb kayak, better quality rope that does not abraid after only a few uses, and adjustable straps so the Kayak could be more easily raised to the ceiling without a long distance from the hooks to the kayak due to long straps.

For the price, this is a perfectly fine way to hang stuff in the garage. We used it to hang a rooftop luggage carrier. The straps were just long enough to go around our carrier, and it is holding it now above head-height and out of the way. Mounting it required a trip to the hardware store to buy a 2x4, lag screws and washers (to attach the 2x4 to the studs in the ceiling), and wood screws to attach the pulley's brackets to the 2x4. The instructions are pretty much useless, as other reviewers have said. The tricky part is figuring out how to thread the ropes through the pulley system: the photo that comes with the instructions actually shows the ropes going over the braking mechanism, which is wrong. However, if you look at the mechanism closely, it's pretty easy to figure out how the ropes are supposed to go so that the braking bracket will press against them and hold them in place when there is weight on the pulleys. I have uploaded a picture that shows the pulley and ropes in action. Indeed, the pulleys and the braking mechanism work just fine, so that with the carrier hanging below the pulleys, the brakes keep the ropes from slipping, and the tie-off on the wall is not under much tension at all. The quality of the ropes isn't great, but they're sufficient for the task, it appears. It took us longer to install and hang the whole thing than we had anticipated due to the trip to the hardware store and a little confusion over the ropes. It also required a little extra attention when actually hoisting the carrier because the ropes slip off their tracks in the pulleys pretty easily. But it is now doing exactly what we purchased it for and seems like a perfectly fine product.

I have tried MANY of these lifts. There are basically two types of these on the market. They can be broken down into single or dual PULL rope systems. On a single rope system (usually the cheaper ones meant for bikes) the front and back can not be raised or lowered independently. The problem with this is that I have had a bike fall and almost hit me because the front of the bike was higher than the rear causing the hook which was on the seat to slip off. This mount has a dual rope pull meaning that as its coming down you can keep the item level.

I have 9 of these in my 3 car garage I store the following

1. Werner D6224-2 300-Pound Duty Rating Fiberglass Flat D-Rung Extension Ladder, 24-Foot
2. Werner MT-22 300-Pound Duty Rating Telescoping Multi-Ladder, 22-Foot
3. Louisville Ladder FS1510 300-Pound Duty Rating Fiberglass Step Ladder, 10-Feet
4. Louisville Ladder FS1506 300-Pound Duty Rating Fiberglass Ladder, 6-Feet
5. Yeats 59-Inch Aluminum Dual Strap Appliance Hand Truck
6. Thule Atlantis Rooftop Cargo Box
