4.0 out of 5 stars Lift Hoist Pulley for Kayak
This product is OK for the price. All parts were included, instructions were good, this system raises my kayak as claimed. If I did this again, I would consider paying a higher price for a higher quality system that might include ball bearings to reduce the high force needed to raise my 50 lb kayak, better quality rope that does not abraid after only a few uses, and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok for the price
Per previous reviews - instructions suck. A bit of experimentation worked out the rope routing - and the rest can be rigged. Short 2 screws, and some included that I have no clue what they are for. The biggest problem for me - is that the straps are NOT adjustable - they are sewn at one length. will figure out a way to shorten them, but since the description says they...

This product is OK for the price. All parts were included, instructions were good, this system raises my kayak as claimed. If I did this again, I would consider paying a higher price for a higher quality system that might include ball bearings to reduce the high force needed to raise my 50 lb kayak, better quality rope that does not abraid after only a few uses, and adjustable straps so the Kayak could be more easily raised to the ceiling without a long distance from the hooks to the kayak due to long straps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Performs as Advertised, October 31, 2010

I bought two of these for my kayaks. They work as advertised, but there are a couple of things to note:

The installation directions are not clear, but with some common sense, it can be installed safely. The recommended install method is to attach the lift to a 2x4 and attach the 2x4 to the ceiling. If you install the lift at a right angle to the studs in the ceiling, you will have to install it this way. We bought an 8 ft 2x4, lugs, and washers in addition to this kit for the installation. If installing using the 2x4 method, a second person and 2 ladders will be required. One person will have to hold the 2x4 up to the ceiling while the other uses a drill and lug to secure it to the ceiling.

Be very careful when raising/lowering your kayak. Practice with the locking mechanism so you know what angle to pull the rope to ensure it locks when you are not pulling the rope, and ensure that all objects and people are clear of the kayak in case you do not lock the rope correctly and the boat falls (my kayak fell about 4 ft on the first try). Once you get the hang of it, it works fine. I recommend installing the rope cleat above the reach of children.

To raise your boat high enough to walk or park a car under it, the straps will need to be shortened. The easiest way to do this is to rap one end of the strap around the hook until you have the desired length.

I cannot see paying $100 for other similar products. This will do the trick. If you have problems with the rope fraying, the rope can easily be replaced for a low cost at your local home improvement store.

The Hoist was easy to install and did the job. Would prefer to have double pulleys to make it easier to lift.

Purchased this lift to store my 14' kayak in my garage. Delivery was very fast, right to my door. Instructions were good and the installation was a snap. Just for additional information, the bottom of my kayak sits 40 1/2" below the ceiling...the highest it will go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to install and works great., October 14, 2011

This is great product it is easy to install and it has a break so you only need one person to operate and can stop and go any time. One piece of warning. The straps that hold the kayak require about 20 inches of space. Adding to that the space requirements of the brakets your kayak will be about 3 feet from the ceiling. Make sure you have enough space. I had to shorten the staps and now have 6' 4'' to walk under the kayaks and park a minivan. It was cloose.

The instructions are garbage. The grammar is completely incorrect (as if it were translated from another language by a computer) and unclear. You will have to just sit down and figure out how the system works and how it is mounted. The hardware included is insufficient to install the system. There were only 2 lags screws with my kit - you'll need 4.

On the positive side, for $20, you can go to the hardware store, buy more lag screws and figure out how it works.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price, August 31, 2011

We use this harness to hang our kayak above our car in the garage. So, we obviously trust it's mechanisms. It's gotten stuck a few times, but I'm not sure if that's user-error. One thing, the thick straps are quite long, so even when the hooks are at the top of the pulley system, the kayak is hanging about 4 feet below. I thought about buying new straps from a vinyl company, but I haven't made the effort. All in all, it does what it's supposed to, as long as you can handle it being 4 feet below your hanging mechanism. I haven't seen much wear-and-tear on the rope, but we don't pull our kayak down frequently.

3.0 out of 5 stars good product-no instructions, August 17, 2011

The lift is well made and works well once you figure out how to install it. There are, in essance, no instructions that came with the product. I was able to go on line and look closely at other sellers' sites and see how the thing works. The instructions that came with the lift were for a bicycle lift and were very poor at that. I have extensive mechanical experiance so I was able to see hoe to put it together.
