Book Description

For courses in Police Administration/Management. Based upon the authors' extensive experience in teaching, policing, and management, this introduction to the day-to-day rigors of a police department stresses that management is only effective if it is based upon a combination of both theory and practice. Using a proactive rather than a reactive approach, it stresses that police managers anticipate events through planning, use police personnel and resources effectively, and deliver a whole range of police services to the community. Proactive Police Management provides a review, analysis, and synthesis of traditional scientific management, the behavioral/systems approach, and the human relations approach.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The greatest strengths of this text are its progressive approach, the manner in which controversial issues are addressed, and the inclusion of practical data such as officer deployment plans, budgets, and training curricula." — John Race, University of Pittsburgh

2.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but dated, January 11, 2007
In reviewing this work as a required text for my class, several of my classmates commented (and I agreed) that many of the studies cited in this book are dated; numerous cites were from the 1970's and even from pre-1950's. The other theme noticed about this book was that a large majority of the perceptions made by the authors applied to law enforcement organizations from the East coast and although West Coast organizations were mentioned, many of these points seemed dated (again, referring to the first comment).

1.0 out of 5 stars proactive police management, February 25, 2011
This book is hard to read, because it is poorly written. There are too many typos. Too many references to studies done in the 60s and 70s. Book is more of a fantasy than a book about management. If I did not need to read this for a promotional exam, I would have never gotten past the fist chapter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Proactive Police Management Study Guide, December 11, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This study guide is complex and boring but was required study material for my husband's department exam.
