Book Description

Problem-oriented Clinical Microbiology and Infection is a well established and widely used medical textbook. It is problem-based, in line with current medical teaching, and covers 70 clinical cases. The book takes the student through a case of infection starting with presentation, to laboratory diagnosis and treatment. It covers all the information that medical students need to know on the clinical aspects of microbiology and infection including epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical diagnosis, management; the special topics of the diagnostic laboratory, vaccination and antimicrobial agents are presented separately. The accessible writing style is complemented by numerous good quality photographs, illustrations, and boxes to highlight key information or to address relevant related areas.

This second edition has been updated to include new material on AIDS/HIV, emerging antibiotic-resistant bacteria and new viral pathogens such as SARS. Included in the text is additional clinical information, to complete the reader's comprehension and knowledge base, as well as self-assessment material at the end of each section. The book also contains appendices that cover the sensible use of the laboratory, commonly used anti-infective agents and the current UK immunisation schedule.

Changes in the undergraduate medical curricula include greater emphasis on the integration of information and problem-solving. This textbook, which is primarily geared towards the undergraduate medical student, will also be of use to those studying for postgraduate examinations.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I have no hesitation in recommending it to others. I think that trainee biomedical scientists, clinical scientists and other healthcare professionals will find it worthwhile. Microbiology Today A very useful book, essential to the understanding of clinical microbiology and the revision of infectious disease in the clinical setting. Imperial College of Medicine Gazette A great deal of work has gone into the preparation of the clinical cases and, at this price, this second edition should be a popular update of a well established book. The Bulletin of the Royal College of Pathologists, 128

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent consolidation book! Fun!, June 12, 2009
This review is from: Problem-orientated Clinical Microbiology and Infection (Oxford Medical Publications) (Paperback)
This is a fantastic book that unlike most others out there does a great job of putting you in the driver's seat - it's clinically oriented and as such presents patients to you asks you critical questions that you should be asking yourself. It's amazing because of it's completeness; if the patient has a specific set of symptoms the book reminds you that the differential must include other, non-micro diagnoses.

A wonderful book that I went through with my study group and the best part is that it acts also as a springboard for discussion of a great many other things. Very wonderfully written and FUN! especially if you have an intermediate to good understanding of micro before you start. This book will assume you have a minimal knowledge of micro, so it makes a perfect companion to ridiculously simple as that book is the opposite - all the basic facts are there, skipping the application. This book solidifies.
