Book Description

September 27, 2004 0521539439 978-0521539432
In this volume some of the world's most prominent scholars of politics offer original discussions exploring what political science is and how political scientists should aspire to do their work. Although beset by constant debate about method, at the core of the study of politics is the unifying concern as to whether political scientists should view themselves primarily as scientists, or, instead, try to focus their knowledge on resolving the many complex world crises currently happening.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Theorists and empiricists concerned about the future direction of political science will find this book extremely informative. Highly recommended." CHOICE

Book Description

The study of politics is beset by debates about method. At the core of these debates is a single unifying concern: should political scientists view themselves primarily as scientists, or should they instead try to illuminate the large, complicated, untidy problems thrown up in the world, even if the chance to offer definitive explanations is low? In this book, some of the world's most prominent scholars of politics offer original discussions exploring what political science is and how political scientists should aspire to do their work.

5.0 out of 5 stars collection of thought-provoking essays, May 30, 2011
This review is from: Problems and Methods in the Study of Politics (Paperback)
This volume is not designed for those searching for a "how to" guide to social science research. It is designed for those who recognize, and want to better appreciate, the problematic nature of all social inquiry given the lack of consensus in the social sciences on basic issues of epistemology and methodology. No, the essays do not decisively say that method-driven research is better/worse than problem-driven research; but they do demonstrate the limitations of studies that are guided exclusively by a commitment to a given methodology. The fact that general essays are juxtaposed with studies that focus on specific substantive issues help to advance the fundamental purpose of this volume.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible book - waste of time, December 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The last piece in the book by Mearsheimer points out that barely any of the contributors addressed the question raised by the contributors and it led me to wonder what the point of assigning the entire book for a course was. Moreover, the book spends tonnes of time talking about rational choice theory, which to me seemed irrelevant.
