Book Description

November 13, 2008 0883858282 978-0883858288

The Canadian journal Crux Mathematicorum has a devoted following among people interested in mathematics problem solving, especially mathematics competitions. A central figure over its thirty-year history is Murray Seymour Klamkin (1921 2004) who started the famous Olympiad Corners and edited it for many years. He is a regular contributor to the Problem Section as well, both composing new problems and solving those proposed by others.

This book is a collection of all of Murray s problems that have appeared in Crux Mathematicorum. It is a most valuable resource for anyone interested in problem solving and competitions. The problems are classified by subject, and the topics span the entire spectrum of the mathematical curriculum, from the very elementary to the most sophisticated. Often, multiple solutions are provided. Now and then, we get comments from Murray himself, providing additional insight to the problem under discussion.

Since the problems are largely independent of one another, it is not necessary to understand everything, which makes the book suitable reading at any level, from junior high school to graduate school. It is a very good way of exposing young readers to more advanced topics.

Book Description

A collection of problems proposed by Murray Klamkin over his career. It contains the 'quickies' (problems with quick and neat solutions) he proposed in 'Crux Mathematicorum,' his longer problems, and also problems which were proposed in tribute to him after he died. Solutions are provided.

About the Author

Andy Liu is a professor in department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Alberta. His research interests span discrete mathematics, hypergraph theory, combinatorial geometry, foundations of mathematics, mathematical education and recreational mathematics. The common characteristics of the research problems he works on are that they are easy to understand but not so easy to solve.

In 1985 Bruce Shawyer joined Memorial University as full professor, serving as head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics from 1985-91. Dr Shawyer's professional interests in mathematics research include approximation of the sums of slowly convergent series, the summability of series and integrals, and Euclidean geometry. He is founder of the mathematical challenge for junior high school students and former head coach of the Canadian team for the International Mathematical Olympiad. Dr Shawyer has authored 118 publications and is currently Editor-in-Chief of the ATOM (A Taste Of Mathematics) book series.
