3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite the eye-opener it could be., November 26, 2009
This review is from: Procedures in Cosmetic Dermatology Series: Blepharoplasty: Textbook with DVD (Hardcover)
I am a cosmetic physician and a big fan of this series, particularly the Liposuction title. However, the Blepharoplasty title is not up to the standard of the others IMHO.
Firstly, the editing has been incomplete, leaving errors. Some of the diagrams are mislabelled in several places. For example, orbital fat has been labelled as "orbital septum". There are also textual errors; I found one obvious error of fact, and an editing error where a writer has unwittingly repeated himself. And I haven't finished reading it yet once.
I understand this series is somewhat party political in favour of dermatologists over plastic surgeons. That's OK. But I am unaware of the same rivalry with ophthalmologists. So I am surprised that this book on blepharoplasty with around a dozen contributors includes no input from an ophthalmologist.
Next, the chapter on advanced upper bleph reads more like a personal polemic than a balanced review of current literature and practice. As such, it belongs in a oculoplastic journal as an opinion piece rather than in a textbook designed to be a primer for those naive to the procedure.
I imagine there is a burgeoning market for books of this type. And certainly the series is deservedly popular. Hence, I understand, but do not condone, the publisher's apparent desire to rush this book out without thorough editing. For that's how it reads.
We in the cosmetic field are accustomed to half-developed therapies and half-designed machines being shoved out into the marketplace to catch the wave of public enthusiasm for aesthetic treatments. I suppose the same thing can happen with books. Pity. For by such means all that is achieved is a killing of a particular gold-egg-laying goose.
