The goal of the conference, held in Greensboro, North Carolina, September 8-10, 2002, was to promote partnerships to protect the environment and improve the quality of life.
The conference was planned by G. B. Reddy (Professor of Environmental Microbiology), Shoou-Yuh Chang (Professor of Environmental Engineering), Vinayak Kabadi (Professor of Chemical Engineering), Keith Schimmel (Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering), and Godfrey A. Uzochukwu (Professor and Director, Waste Management Institute). These individuals developed the conference theme: Environmental Science and Technology. The following agencies contributed to the financial support of the conference: North Carolina A&T State University (Waste Management Institute, DOE Chair of Excellence in Environmental Disciplines and Center for Environmental Remediation), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Center for Environmentally Responsible Solvents and Processes), North Carolina State University (Kenan Center for Carbon Dioxide Utilization), University of Texas at Austin, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Energy (Savannah River Site and Headquarters), and National Science Foundation (Science and Technology Center).
