Book Description

July 18, 1994
This book provides a range of co-ordinated heuristics and engineering rules of thumb in selecting process equipment to transport, use and exchange energy, separate species, and react chemicals. Data is organized systematically on a need-to-know basis. An extensive set of illustrated procedures demonstrate the implications of a variety of design options, and the author discusses order-of-magnitude sizing procedures that can be done consistently in about five minutes. Also outlined are principles for selecting from among processing options for transportation of gases, liquids and solids; for selection of drives and heat exchangers; for separation of homogenous phases; and for reactors. Practical problems and fully worked examples with applications in a broad range of industries are provided with the intention of bridging the gap between fundamentals and practice. The book also demonstrates to students how to apply the law of optimum sloppiness and gain experience designing processes, trouble-shooting faults and analyzing existing plants to see how they can be improved. This book is intended for chemical engineers involved in the design of process and equipment selections.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Much closer to a handbook of practical methods and data, this comprehensive guide to process and plant design is based on rules and practices in industry, not theory. It comes much closer to describing and showing the factors and constraints that apply to real-life process design and equipment selection, and supplies the reader with cost, property, and other data that will permit him or her to do reasonably accurate order-of-magnitude designs.

From the Back Cover

Offering practical methods and data, this comprehensive guide to process and plant design is based on rules and practices of industry, not theory. It describes the factors and constraints that apply to real-life process design and equipment selection, and supplies cost, property, and other data. For chemical engineers.

This review is from: Process Design and Engineering Practice (Paperback)
A well written book that a chemical engineer can use. A great companion book with Byrds Transport Phenomena and The Chemical Engineers handbook. Written from the perspective of design of chemical processes and applicable to other fields as well, such as physics, biochemistry, food science ect. Covers economic aspects and safety issues and general engineering design considerations. Not outdated.
