I used to have one of these back in college, ate them all the time, until I graduated and chucked mine out...regretted it to this day so I got another.

We have a foreman - makes great panini but these sandwich makers are one of a kind and can't be replicated in any other machine.

It's for sure a unitasker
You can't use pepridge farm loaves - the slices are too big, think of generic white bread size and you're in luck. Big slices will hang off the side and not give you the perfect triangles you need. You can cut bread to size but that's a lot of work.

you don't need to lube the machine (it's non stick, and you don't need to butter the outside of the bread) - that's just added calories

Suggestions:
I buy a GIANT bag (talking costco size) of mexican cheese blend
Faves: Pepperoni & Cheese
Ham & Cheese
Hot Dog and Cheese
Salami and Cheese
Peanut Butter Sandwiches (I have an aversion to jam/jellys/marmalade) so the gooey peanut butter is awesome.

I rarely use any seasoning in it

Dessert:
Nutella - that's it, nutella
If you're fruity - maybe some strawberry jam/marmalade

Now that I'm grown and with my own fridge, I'm definitely going to be more creative (although the above mentions are still my favorite) YUM!
Quick meals 2-3 minutes cook time with maybe 2-3 minutes prep time.

Also great for kiddos. The sandwiches are small enough (triangles) for my 2 year old's hands, PB&J and FlufferNutter, just don't leave it in too long, or the gooey stuff gets a bit hot and can be dangerous.

I received mine in the mail yesterday and was excited but I couldn't get the button on to open the sandwich maker. It was either stuck or defective as my husband couldn't open it either. I am returning mine today.

I was forced to break the lock button on the very first use! The actual toasting is pretty decent. However, with the very first use, the lock button wouldn't release. I actually had to insert a knife to pry the halves apart, which broke the lock. The unit still works. Very, very disappointing, Proctor Silex.

Update: after perhaps a few dozen uses, the non-stick coating (along one dividing edge) has now started to wear off. Because these flakes are potentially carcinogenic when carcinogenic, into the garbage the sandwich maker has gone. How utterly disappointing, P S.

If I can stop one person from buying this POS I'll consider it a sucessful review...I read the other reviews and thought to myself oh I bet they have the issues fixed for the unit not opening properly...I WAS WRONG!! First two sandwiches I made it wouldn't release so I had to unplug the unit and jimmy it open with a knife. Phew nothing broke. Then I made another two sandwiches for my kids and bammmm what do you know stuck again. This time jimmying it open broke all the plastic surrounding the locking mechanism. I was so pissed at myself for buying it after reading about this common problem i threw it in the burn pit. I'll put alot more emphasis on user reviews after this and probably order another. Hamilton Beach/Proctor should fire every person involved in this things design and I'm not even kidding it's that big of a POS!!!

Bought this as a little fun gadget to make treats for the kids. Turned out much more useful than I originally thought it would. Okay, so make sure you get the standard sized bread (you know, Wonderbread size...I usually find the whole wheat store brand). Then fill the center up. We started with a basic cheese sandwich (shredded cheese cooks up in a minute or so), but have since branched out to cinammon sugar and fruit filled stuff. I throw in veggies with the cheese, too. It's fun and very easy.

As a mom, what I like: it toasts up grilled cheese WITHOUT having to use butter, margarine, mayo, whatever people put on the outside of a normal grilled cheese to toast it. Cool and your getting rid of that grease.

It's not the sturdiest of kitchen gadgets, so I don't expect it to last forever, but I'll be happy if I can squeeze a year's worth out of it and will buy another.

Oh, for what it's worth, I didn't have the handle breaking issue. Took me a few tries to get the hang of the locking mechanism, but I tested that out before I tried cooking anything. And one more thing: use your darned common sense and don't overfill the sandwiches if you don't want a big mess. You'd think this would be plain common sense, but evidently it's not from the stories I've heard. :P

I bought the toaster and its spring and lock are broken with in 2 weeks. I did press it a little harder to lock, but didn't expect it to be so delicate.

A great tool. Grilled ham and cheese? Toasted peanut butter and jelly? I've even cooked eggs in it and made French toast. I love this thing!

Grew up eating grilled cheese and other grilled sandwiches. Stationed overseas I missed the little things from home. This was a good start to the things that remind me of America. Thank you. Works great and made a serviceman happy.
