Good value for money but mind the gap!,
By
This review is from: Proctor Silex 45802B Hot Pot, Blue (Kitchen)
I purchased this product in the mistaken belief that it was a kettle; i.e. that it boils water and then turns off. It doesn't. It boils water, and any other liquid one cares to put in it, but then maintains the temperature at a given level. To that extent the product is very good value for money. It has no visible heating elements so scale is not a problem and it looks nice. As a hot pot, the only drawback I can find is that a gap develops between the back of the lid and the handle when pouring liquid. This, of course, means that steam can escape and provide a nasty shock by scalding one's hand; nothing fatal, just a little annoying. The other annoyance is that there is no "Off" switch, which means that I have to take the plug out when I have finished using it. However, for [the price] I can't really complain too much.

While researching inexpensive electric kettles for the occasional in-office cup of tea, I checked for capacity, ease of cleaning, etc., but I never thought to check if it would actually TURN OFF. After ordering this 45802 Hot Pot I failed to note that the temperature dial goes from Warm to Boil but has no actual Off position. After boiling my first cup of water on Friday (which did work nicely) I left, only to come back on Monday to discover that the pot was warm! Luckily there was still some water in it and no damage done. In addition, I have also found that the way that the lid seals near the handle is prone to leave a small gap through which boiling steam will escape as you tip it forward, thus exposing your hand to an unpleasant surprise. I think that someone let the junior engineer work on this one and would choose another model next time.

Great buy,

This hot pot is great in the dorm. It boils fast, cleans easy, and is small enough to not be a problem. I haven't had any problems with a "placticy" taste, and really no problems overall.

In addition to being attractive looking, it is a rapid boiler, so I make my much needed first "cuppa" in a flash. Product performs as advertised! Winnie P.

I have been using this product several times a day- almost daily- for extended periods of time and it has worked like a champ. The only reasons I didn't give it five stars is because: 1. The spout tends to dribble down the side a bit when you go to pour it out - maybe it's just me, but I don't feel I should have to experiment in finding the "optimal pouring angle". 2. When I go to turn the tempurature down to the off position I will not only hear a click (no problem) but will see a flash through the water container. While I have been hit by house current before (and worse) I really don't consider it a hobby so this has me a little anxious. Maybe some other user can provide information to see if this is common with this unit or not.

Not very safe!,

This hot pot was the only (!!!) kind of electric tea kettle available anywhere locally (checked WalMart, KMart, Big Lots, Hall's Hardware, and the grocery stores). What I strongly dislike about the pot is the fact that it doesn't switch off automatically once its content has reached the boiling point. It also doesn't have an off switch, so make sure you unplug it after every use! Another safety hazard is the lid: I have scalded myself several times because I hadn't put it on exactly right and hot steam was coming out of a small opening right where you put your thumb. It would be much better if this pot had a flip-top. I wish I had done some research and purchased a kettle online!

LOVE IT!!!!! I have this one in my office to make Ramen Noodles. I put the water in, It boils in under 2 minutes, I add noodles and presto, I have lunch in under 4 minutes. I've been using this for about a year now and it still looks and works like new. All I do is rinse it out as soon as I am finished eating. I can't imagine having anything that would be more convenient or reliable.

We travel with our children a lot, and some hotels don't have a kitchen available at all times, or maybe they're too expensive when all your kids want is macaroni and cheese or a hot dog or noodles and butter. This Hot Pot does the job perfectly, is easy to clean, is lightweight, and doesn't seem like it will shatter or anything if it gets knocked over. In any case, it was just what we wanted.

This is one must-have item for those living in dorms where you have neither a kitchen nor are you allowed to bring up a stove lest you set off the smoke detectors and have fire trucks coming after you :DIt boils water really quick and you can heat up all your canned food/instant noodles in this pot or boil eggs too. The possibilities are somewhat endless. There is no auto off button but it doesn't bother me the slightest. Treat it like a normal pot where you're not supposed to leave the stove and you'd be fine. Just pull the plug out when its done boiling or set it on low if you want to keep the contents warm. Its cheap, its efficient, it does almost anything. For a poor college student like me who face lots of restrictive cooking dorm rules, this pot is just perfect. *used it for 2 months now and it shows no signs of rust in case you were wondering about that. I make sure to dry it after every use though and not leave any water in it overnight.

Tolerates being boiled dry.,
This review is from: Proctor Silex 45802B Hot Pot, Blue (Kitchen)
This hot pot found me in 2007. I expected it to maybe last for a year of dorm cooking. Four years later, it's still cooking. The non-stick coating on the heating element has long since been replaced by calcium deposit; my region has very hard water. This hasn't affected performance at all. I can boil water for tea in literally 2 minutes, faster than any other method. The knob is not a potentiometer for the heating element, as on a typical electric stove, but a thermostat. This was a disappointment at first. Once the thermocouple reaches temperature, the element will click on and off every few seconds, keeping the water hot/simmering/boiling depending on knob position. Fortunately, this arrangement also acts as a safety shut-off. Last night, I forgot about the hot pot for a couple of hours while boiling water to humidify my house. I found it completely dry, quite hot, but the plastic was not melted at all. It still works. Very reliable, and very forgiving of stupid mistakes. Unexpected for a piece of cheap plastic. |
