4.0 out of 5 stars Proctor-Silex Coffeemaker
The only complaint I have is when you pour the water in or pour a cup of coffee. The pour spout is too small and you have to pour slowly!! Sometimes that doesn't even work and I end up with paper towels moping up the counter top. I have bought this brand for years because it last longer than any coffee maker I have ever bought!!! If they fixed this problem it would be a...

We've used Proctor-Silex products in our home before and expected a product of slightly better quality.

This coffeemaker functions, but only on a very basic level.

The entire unit is light and flimsy-feeling (it moves every time you press one of the buttons on the front), and it's nearly impossible to load it with water without spilling the contents of the carafe.

The LCD clock is ridiculously small and virtually unviewable. The LED lights in the switches are so tiny and dim that you can't readily discern whether or not the appliance is even on.

If the carafe seems smallish, that's because it is. The "12-cup" claim is dubious, because Proctor-Silex is apparently now using a smaller cup size in making their measurements. Our former machine would make enough coffee to fill our 11-ounce coffee mugs a total of six times. This coffeemaker will fill four 11-ounce mugs, with perhaps a couple of quarter-cup servings left over.

I can't really fault Proctor-Silex for making this appliance -- they need machines at all price points, and it DOES make coffee. But there are NO "bells and whistles," and the entire things just has a "cheap" feel about it.

We're already looking forward to replacing this model, and you can be assured that the next time we'll bite the bullet and spend a few dollars more to get something a bit better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, March 26, 2009
This review is from: Proctor-Silex 48574 Automatic Drip Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
A few days ago, I received 2 of these coffeemakers to replace the large and cumbersome coffeemakers that I had been using. I make both regular and decaf coffee daily, which I then put into thermos carafes. I like the fact that the coffee is very hot and the coffeemakers are light and easy to move around. I have not had them scoot on the countertop when pushing the buttons (as another reviewer reported). I have not had the coffee spill when pouring.
Another reviewer also complained about the dimness of the clock face -- but I prefer it to be dim. It is very visible when I need it, but do not depend on it as a clock (I have other clocks). I find the glaring red numbers on other coffeemakers to be very annoying.
Another plus is that when I remove the coffee basket, there is no puddle of liquid under the filter (as my other maker was wont to do). I prefer paper filters, rather than the permanent filter and they work well in the basket.
The only drawback I have found is that the water reservoir is difficult to fill without spillage (but I circumvent that by using a 1 liter measure to fill, rather than trying to pour from the pot). Other than that I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Love it. It's everything it's advertised to be, and the coffee pot doesn't spill all over the place like the other brands do. Coffee tastes great.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible plastic taste even after cleaning several times, June 15, 2006
This review is from: Proctor-Silex 48574 Automatic Drip Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
Most of the times, we use a coffeemaker to heat water or make tea instead of coffee. I didn't expect the quality is so bad. Before I used it, I boiled about 3 cups of water four times. But the water still had horrible plastic smell and taste.
After reading the instruction, I found out that I was supposed to clean it with vinegar and then 12-cup water twice. I cleaned for three cycles. And then I cleaned with 12-cup water for a couple of more times. The bad smell and taste were still there. I ended up not using it any more. I owned another coffeemaker (Mr Coffee, a cheaper, smaller model) for almost 6 years, and it never had such problem.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad Design in So Many Ways..., September 5, 2010
This review is from: Proctor-Silex 48574 Automatic Drip Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
We owned a Procter Silex coffeemaker that worked well for many years. When it died, we bought this one. What a mistake. I don't know what their product designer was thinking, but it clearly wasn't normal, practical use. Here's what I think is terrible:

- The markings on the carafe can only be read easily if you are left-handed. I assume the vast majority of people are right-handed. Why not put markings on both sides of the carafe.
- The well you pour the water into only has a small opening and one of the electronic components runs through it. If you miss in your aim the water spills into the open hot plate area (the old model was designed so that there was a substantial well opening).
- The markings on the water level indicator on the coffeemaker (not carafe) are impossible to read and it's impossible to see where your water level is - so you can't tell how many cups of coffee you're making.
- Equally lacking in visibility is the clock. How in heaven's name can you set an auto coffeemaker if you can't read the gosh darned clock. It's a black display on a murky seasick green background - so no contrast (the old coffeemaker we had from P.S. had a nice bright red luminous display).
- The coffee flavor intensity adjuster on top of the machine is a phoney. It's just a little tab that's not connected to anything and just spins around, but tries to give the impression you can adjust how hearty (or not) the flavor intensity of your coffee will be.
- I think our old P.S. machine produced much better tasting coffee too.

I don't know if all these changes were cost-cutting measures or just ignorance to good design or both. But I'm thoroughly disgusted with the quality and out searching again for another machine. What a waste of money!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Except for>>>>, November 24, 2008

We love this coffee maker. It makes VERY HOT coffee which we have found not to be the case with most of drip type coffee makers. It brews delicious coffee as well. The only thing that I would improve is the ability to fill with water before brewing. The space is designed in a way that it is near impossible not to spill some water when filling. There just isnt enough space to pour. Otherwise its a great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars really like this coffee-maker, September 9, 2011

This review is from: Proctor-Silex 48574 Automatic Drip Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
I actually bought this to replace the first one which I broke the carafe to, and messed up the filter. Anyways, I figured it wouldn't be that much more to just buy a new one, and it was actually much cheaper than the original. ($50 to $30). I love being able to wake up and have coffee brewing, and it looks nice. I like the other options as well. The only problem I had, was that it said that it came with the permanent filter, but that was missing. No major problem, I just bought one at the store. they need to be replaced every one in a while anyway and I didn't want to wait for a replacement. Other than that, my partner and I are completely happy with this machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes Great coffee, April 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Proctor-Silex 48574 Automatic Drip Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
I don't know how one coffee maker makes better coffee than another. Perhaps it is because the heating element is more sensitive. Anyway, this is my second coffeemaker of this type. I accidentally broke the first one by not seating the carafe all the way into the maker. This caused the water to accumulate in the basket. Evantually grounds and water back flowed into the reservoir, which in turn sent grounds into the tubing. Couldn't get them out. So promptly ordered a new one from Amazon, saving the extra basket and carafe from the old one. Perhaps Silex could add a feature for dummies like me. Have the heat shut off when the carafe is removed?

Anyway the new one works just fine, although the carafe fits a little tighter, but now I am wise to that flaw so make sure the carafe is fully seated to avoid another catastrophe!

My previous coffee maker did not make good coffee. I was always going to the local gourmet shop for that, now I don't go there nearly as often.
