Book Description

Sister Agatha Mysteries July 8, 2008
"Thief in Retreat is a thoroughly absorbing, sharply drawn story with a protagonist who is courageous, intelligent, and endearing. Sister Agatha, with her restored Harley Davidson motorcycle and ex-police dog, Pax are a dynamite team that's hard to beat… I eagerly await Sister Agatha's next adventure." – Earlene Fowler, author of Delectable Mountains

"Aimee and David Thurlo's nimble plotting leaves readers turning pages while Our Lady of Hope Monastery's compelling characters draw you into their richly textured world. Sister Agatha is a blessing and you'll believe in Prey for a Miracle!" --Julia Spencer-Fleming, Edgar finalist and author of To Darkness and to Death

Our Lady of Hope is an aging monastery run by a cloistered order in rural New Mexico. Perennially cash-strapped for needed repairs and maintenance, when the local diocese offers to pay for a new water well it is, well, a godsend. But there’s a catch – in return, they want the monastery to house a novice nun from a different order who needs a place to stay locally while she teaches at the Catholic school and an order to take responsibility for her while she’s there. And Sister Josephine – Sister Jo as she likes to be called – is a handful. Loud, boisterous, free with her opinions, inappropriate, impulsive and snores loud enough to wake the dead, the young nun doesn’t fit in well with the contemplative order and the older nuns of Our Lady of Hope.

If the teeth-grinding of the older nuns and the repetitive deep sighs of the Reverand Mother weren’t enough, there’s also the increasingly dangerous sounding threats that arrive at the monestary. Since Sister Agatha has been involved in her fair share of investigations, there’s no lack of people who might harbor a grudge against her. But is she really the target? And is Sister Jo – who arrived right before the threats began – somehow entangled in this increasingly dangerous web?

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Sister Agatha is part of New Mexico’s Our Lady of Hope Monastery, where she works as an “extern”—one of the few in this community of cloistered nuns who has dealings with the outside world. Not just mundane dealings, either; this is a mystery series, after all, so Sister Agatha’s external encounters usually involve murder and evil. The Thurlos, also authors of the fine series starring Navajo cop Ella Clah, have more of a stretch making this one work. It’s hard to suspend disbelief when murder so regularly touches the monastery, as it does here, in the fifth Sister Agatha mystery, when a woman parishioner who had left a phone message for the extern nun is gunned down right outside the church. Sister’s guilt over not returning the parishioner’s call propels her to solve the case. Most of the plot consists of a series of threats to the nuns, punctuated by news of a burglar on the loose. Despite the many harbingers of approaching danger, this moves very slowly. For series (or Thurlo) fans only. --Connie Fletcher

3.0 out of 5 stars Thurlo book mediocre, August 10, 2008

I have read all the Sister Agnes books so far, but they are not up to the quality of Thurlo's (written with her husband) Ella Chah series. These are written on a middle school level and are "sweet" rather than realistic. Much background on the Catholic church is interesting, but is repeated in book after book.

The Thurlos have created an endearing character and the Sister Agatha series is fun to read. while not heady literature, the pace is good, the plot logical and the scenic descriptions are just fine. I have been reading a lot of books with nuns as central characters and this series is by far one of the very best. i look forward to reading more installments of this series.
