Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

For many playwrights, the play is not complete until an audience has seen it, but the difficulties involved in producing a play create a formidable barrier. Hillenbrand, associate chair and managing director of theater at Ball State University and a regionally known playwright, provides clear direction to help the playwright, actor, designer, or theater benefactor self-produce a play. Chapters explain how to conduct readings, construct a budget, raise funds, find a performing space, work with the various members of the creative team, handle legal and financial issues, create publicity, and make a working timetable for the various activities. Hillenbrand also includes a lengthy bibliography and lists of national and regional theater organizations, drama bookstores, rights and royalties agencies, state arts agencies, and useful contacts. An especially notable feature is the summation of major points at the end of each chapter. Useful for larger public libraries. J. Sara Paulk, Coastal Plain Regional Lib., Tifton, GA

4.0 out of 5 stars Still relevant, December 11, 2010

This review is from: Produce Your Play Without a Producer: A Survival Guide for Actors and Playwrights Who Need a Production (Career Development Series) (Paperback)
I used this book as a starter to self-produce 2 plays in the past 5 yrs.
Though it's nearly 10 yrs. old, most of the information and advice is still
relevant and quite useful. So few books like it; can't go wrong, esp.for the price.
