This review is from: Producing Great Sound for Film and Video, Third Edition (DV Expert Series) (Paperback)
I am working at an Internet video course based on Flash Actionscript 3.0. As a professional consultant/trainer I have no problem with the content and as a former scientific programmer I have no problem with AS3.0. Video however was entirely new for me. It took me quite some time to get to know the camera and how to set up a temporary greenscreen studio. Shortly thereafter I discovered two things:
1) The way to present spoken text in front of a camera is radically different from the way I always presented tekst in front of an audience. You can't make mistakes and you must speak in soundbytes and oneliners just like politicians do. 2) Nomatter how good the Flash visuals and other visuals are, sound is the vehicle that communicates the message. I am almost through the learning phase. I have made a simple autocue and bought a wireless Lavalier microphone. So far I have spent more time and money to get the audio right than to produce the visuals. Most study books about video contain only one chapter about audio. This is absolutely not enough. This book is exclusively about audio and it is very thourough. It gave me the confidence to handle the audio part.

If you want better Sound...,
By john livings "John" (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Producing Great Sound for Film and Video, Third Edition (DV Expert Series) (Paperback)
I have been using, Producing Great Sound for Film and Video, Third Edition (DV Expert Series) For about a year.
After reading the Book, (And listening to the CD) I now use it as a Reference Manual. I have Shot Video and Recorded Sound for a few years and always struggled with the Audio, After reading Jay's books (This one and "Audio Postproduction for Film and Video") I am actually getting a handle on the Audio. I recommend buying or checking out at the Library at least 2 of Jay Rose's books. [...] 1-Producing Great Sound for Film and Video, Third Edition (DV Expert Series) by Jay Rose 2-Audio Postproduction for Film and Video, Second Edition (DV Expert Series) by Jay Rose If you Shoot and Edit Video/Audio and want to take your Audio a Quantum Leap forward, Both Books should be in your Studio. Good Luck, John

If You're Going To Read Only One Book On Sound...,
By Paul Burns (Cincinnati, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Producing Great Sound for Film and Video, Third Edition (DV Expert Series) (Paperback)
...this would have to be it. I've read a good number of books on the subject and Jay Rose's publication is by far my favorite. While a lot of sound books come across very dry, technical, and quite frankly can tend to be boring, I actually found Producing Great Sound for Film & Video to be entertaining. You can get a real sense of the author's personality while reading, in addition to his obvious wealth of experience in the area of production sound. A lot of aspiring filmmakers I know spend a lot of time studying and practicing shooting techniques, but shy away from really learning enough about sound recording. Well, absolutely nothing to be afraid of with this book. In fact I would bet that most readers will only wish they had read it sooner.

Fantastic, worth every penny,
This review is from: Producing Great Sound for Film and Video, Third Edition (DV Expert Series) (Paperback)
This is an outstanding book. It is written extremely clearly and thoroughly, without feeling too dry or boring. The author clearly has a sense of humour, as well as a wealth of experience of working on soundtracks for a large range of budgets (corporate to feature film). I actually read it cover to cover, non-stop, and have read dipped into it several times since. It is useful for people at all levels, from total beginners to people with a good overview of all aspects of professional production (like me).
I am certainly going to buy his other book (Audio Postproduction). The sections on post in this book were great, and I've already learnt a huge amount. But it just left me hungry for more. I don't like to write gushing reviews, but this really was a great book. If someone asked me if I knew of a good book for video sound production, I would recommend this whole heartedly, without a second thought. I've already leant it to a trusted colleague, who has been in the business for 30 years, and he decided after a week to buy his own copy. But I will throw in one drawback...having read this book, I just now wish I had the budget for hollywood facilities on every production I work on. And I don't. So try to remember to keep your feet on the ground. Decent soundtracks can still be made on relatively low budgets. Even on productions where I am writing, shooting, producing, and editing - this book has undoubtedly given me enough to make serious improvements to my sound recording, processing, and mixing. In summary - if you are serious about sound (and you really should be if you want to produce decent video), and you feel like you need to know more, buy this book!!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Producing Great Sound for Film and Video, Third Edition (DV Expert Series) (Paperback)
I was looking for a book that contained the usual tech details, and more importantly, balanced these with real world examples, with tried and tested solutions.
I purchased this text based on other positive reviews. For me this book balances the tech side with useful anecdotes from real world experiences perfectly. Well written, not too dry and good value. A really useful reference.

As a owner of the Yamaha Sound Reinforcement Handbook, I held this book up to a very high standard, it met those standards and exceeded them.
This book is well written; clear, concise, and thorough, loaded with a wealth of knowledge, and the productions tips are to die for. A must read for anyone who is serious about their storytelling.

Audio Book by Jay Rose,

This book covers everything I can think of to assist me with a confusing subject, audio production. My expertise is motion graphics and video. You can't be an expert in everything but with this book you can get the high end audio you need for your corporate, commercial, television and internet productions without making audio a second profession. Jay is a Clio award winning audio technician whose expertise has helped me produce my own award winning productions. I highly recommend this book for anyone in the production business. It's the audio bible I use.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to buying reference books about anything. The book has to be comprehensive, and it also has to be packed with practical examples, good advice, and it needs to demonstrate a deep technical knowledge of the subject. It also has to be easy to read, understand, and apply. I bought Jay's book because of the great reviews on Amazon.com, and this book definitely lives up to the hype. The book starts by explaining what sound is and how it works. Then the book goes into how sound is captured and recorded. The next sections go into preparing for audio production and then how to actually do it on the set. The final chapters cover the many ways to get that audio into post production and how to handle it there. There is an even more comprehensive book on audio post production from Jay called "Audio Postproduction" and I'd recommend getting that one too, but if you can only afford one book on audio, THIS one is the one to have. (Jay even says so at the beginning, and after reading it I agree). Now, to be honest this doesn't go into the depths of HOW to use programs like SoundBooth or SoundtrackPro, but it does give you enough information to know WHAT to do when you get into those programs and how to set yourself up for success using them. (The main reason for this is that there are so many different platforms, hardware, and software setups that are used in audio post production that it would be ridiculous to try and cover it all at the end of one book.) There is even a section on producing your own custom sound effects using the human voice and editing, and how to make sounds like machinery, monsters, and explosions. What more do you want?
The biggest mistake that will kill your low budget film will be the quality of the audio. Get this book and you have a ton of weapons to fight that! Best of luck on your work! Louis Stephen Carrozzi

This book has really shown me how little I know about audio, and how much I still have to study.
I've translated to Spanish some 60 pages of wonderful tips that I keep handy for times I encounter the situations mentioned here (all the time). I just bought another of Rose's books "Audio Postproduction for Film and Video, Second Edition: After-the-Shoot solutions, Professional Techniques, and Cookbook Recipes to Make Your Project Sound Better (DV Expert Series)" to get a better knowledge of how to enhance my capabilities and to see how things are correctly done. Great books!! |
