Book Description

June 25, 2009 1420092901 978-1420092905

Modern production methods and environmental constraints demand chemical solutions. And as oilfields age, the need for chemicals to ensure steady production increases. Production Chemicals for the Oil and Gas Industry describes classes of production chemicals for use topside and downhole in the upstream oil and gas industry. It includes coverage of their mechanisms, deployment methods, and, where available, environmental properties.

The first chapter gives a general overview of production chemistry issues, the factors that affect the choice of production chemicals, environmental regulations, suggestions for designing greener chemicals, and a brief overview of how to remove mercury and arsenic compounds from production fluids. Each of the remaining chapters begins with an introduction to a problem for which there is a production chemical. The author discusses chemical and non-chemical methods, and then thoroughly details the structural classes of production chemicals and how they can be tested. He includes information on the use of the chemical or technique in the field. References at the end of each chapter provide details on the synthesis, testing, theory, and application of each type of chemical.

Unfortunately, crude oil production is characterized by variable production rates and unpredictable changes to the nature of the produced fluids. Unlike other texts that focus on how products perform in the field and how they are tested, this book focuses on the specific structures of a range of chemicals that are known to deliver the required or desired performance. It also provides an understanding of the issues involved in the use of chemicals and a range of production chemical additives that may be used to rectify issues that would not otherwise be fully resolved.

4.0 out of 5 stars Production Chemicals for the Oil and Gas Industry, August 18, 2009
This review is from: Production Chemicals for the Oil and Gas Industry (Hardcover)
This book covers the entire area of oilfield chemistry with the exception of drilling, cementing and fracturing chemicals.
The book starts with a discussion of environmental regulations and green chemical alternatives. Individual chapters then include discussions of chemicals proposed and used in:
Water and Gas Control, Scale Control, Asphaltene Control, Acid Stimulation, Sand Control, Naphthenic Acid Scale Control, Production Corrosion Control, Gas hydrate Control, Wax Control, Demulsifiers, Foam, Flocculants, Hydrogen Sulfide Scavengers and Oxygen Scavengers, Biocides and Drag reducing agents.
The emphasis of the discussions is on the chemicals and there are hundreds of chemical structures that illustrate the text. Some very useful information is provided on mechanisms of action and on physical application of the chemicals. The very extensive reference list that accompanies each chapter includes many patent citations (issued as well as applications). This provides a very comprehensive look at the field, but does not necessarily describe the chemicals that are actually being used in the industry.
This book will be very useful for practicing oilfield chemists and those in the industry who need a very deep and broad look at the use of chemicals to control a great number of significant production problems. The author of this review has already used it extensively in his current work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comments on "Production Chemicals for the Oil and Gas Industry", April 20, 2010
This review is from: Production Chemicals for the Oil and Gas Industry (Hardcover)
My comments aresimilar to those of the initial revier. This book presents a good overview of oilfiled production problems. It covers the range of problems in topics ranging from well completion to pipelines. The author presents a description of the chemicals/chemical families that have shown activity for the problem at hand with mechanisms of action when known. Supporting field applications are given. An extensive reference list is given at the end of each chapter.

As a long time production chemist I think that "Production Chemicals for the Oil and Gas Industry" is a must have handbook for roduction chamists and an outstanding reference for all discipline engineers involved in Upstream activities.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bible for oil field chemicals, October 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Production Chemicals for the Oil and Gas Industry (Hardcover)
This book covers almost every oil field chemicals ans it shows what kind of chemicals are used for each application in details. Tons of books have been published on the oil field chemistry but there are not so many books which explain the chemical structure and the performance relationship like this book. This book gave me lots of new insight and actually I've got several ideas from this book to apply a concept to the different industrial application. I highly recommend this.
