4.0 out of 5 stars Dex Products Universal Safe Sleeper Bed Rail
This is the best bed rail if you DO NOT have a box spring. My 2 year old recently moved into his toddler bed and I purchased this rail because he has a "bunkie" board instead of a box spring. The length is satisfactory, and the fold-down mechanism is perfect because of the raised hinges. It is easy to make the bed as well. We also purchased it for the grandparent's house...

3.0 out of 5 stars very secure but not good for a crib/daybed/toddler bed
We bought this on the recommendation of a major 'baby' store in our area. "Baby" is in their name...anyhow, they assured us it would be fine for our crib converted to daybed/toddler bed and that we wouldn't need to worry that there was no box spring to secure the rail to.

We also purchased it for the grandparent's house because they have a platform bed. It works equally as well. My only complaint is that maybe the rail isn't high enough but my son hasn't been tempted to climb over it. I would recommend this bed rail for a good transition to a "big boy" bed that doesn't have a box spring (although the manufacturer recommends it).

5.0 out of 5 stars A great and simple solution!, March 8, 2007

This works great on our huge king size bed that has a really thick mattress. It also works well with no bed frame. You just shove the horizontal legs in between the mattress and foundation boxes (or box springs) and it stays in place nicely. Easy to add and take away and looks clean and streamlined. Gives me piece of mind at night that my 10 month old baby won't be able to roll out of bed. In the morning when he wakes though he stands up and shakes it so I have to get up right away and pick him up before he throws himself over the top of it. It only works while the baby is sleeping but I don't think many potential buyers would expect more out of it anyway. It's great- highly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars very secure but not good for a crib/daybed/toddler bed, March 4, 2008
This review is from: Dex Products Universal Safe Sleeper Bed Rail (Baby Product)
We bought this on the recommendation of a major 'baby' store in our area. "Baby" is in their name...anyhow, they assured us it would be fine for our crib converted to daybed/toddler bed and that we wouldn't need to worry that there was no box spring to secure the rail to.

That is true, it attaches well, it's secure, totally tight against the mattress. The are other problems though and we can't wait to get our daughter a regular twin bed so that we can use this rail and be happier with our purchase. Read on...

1. The rail is very long, great to keep our baby in her bed, but our daughter only has a 10 inch opening to use to get in and out of her bed. I guess it's sufficient, but it's a little tight for her getting in and out.

2. The rail is very tall. Again, great for keeping our little one in the bed, but bad design functionally. If we put the mattress/frame up high enough for it to fold down flat (it won't clear the floor because of the height of the rail) then there will be a 4 inch gap between the frame and the daybed rail which poses a risk for our daughter.
We have to put up with not having the rail fold down. Bedtime routine is very hard now, and we have to get our daughter ready for bed elsewhere since her bed is too hard to stand over and kneeling at the side of it is a joke with the 10 inch opening, I can't even get my head and 1 arm through.

3. We had to move the mattress up a level so that the frame was slightly above the daybed rail, so that the very thick hinge (which serves to purpose for us since we can't fold the rail down) didn't put stress on the frame of the bed itself by resting against the daybed rail. This defeats the purpose of the "toddler bed" setting and with only a 10 inch opening, it's an even more precarious a climb for our little one.

Lastly, the directions are ambiguous (at best) and the lack photo's makes putting it together a little challenging, which is why the manufacturer tells the consumer to "take a deep breath" as step one.

All in all, a great rail for a regular bed, a terrible one for crib to toddler bed/daybed. If you are looking to increase the life of your crib with a rail, look elsewhere, this product will likely either go back or make you move to a regular full twin or other larger bed.

Note we have the durel crib/toddler bed/daybed. It was inexpensive, so maybe that contributes to some of our problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Cosleeping!, July 16, 2009

I purchased this bed rail when I was nursing our first child. I wanted to find a way of nursing on both sides without compromising my daughter falling off the side of the bed.

I can honestly say that this is one of the best purchases we have ever made; not only did it serve it's purpose on our cal king bed, but it is now attached to our daughter's big bed (it literally covers almost 3/4 of the bed leaving a small opening at the bottom of the bed for her to climb out from).

I recommend this product to many nursing moms who land up co-sleeping.

With number two on the way, we'll probably buy another one for our bed and repeat the whole cycle again.

Highly recommend it.

My daughter has a twin bed with a trundle and we had a hard time finding a bed rail that could be used without having a box spring and a mattress. This one has the folding feature higher than most and works great! Use this bed rail for a platform bed or a bed w/ trundle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comments by New Dad, December 28, 2007

Never used bed rails before. Bought two, one for a bedspring bed, one for a platform bed. Not sure what the heck the difference in beds even is - but the things work fine. Safe, secure, etc. No hesitation on recommending these to another dad. One comment - easy to set up? Yes, but the directions are a joke. They tell you how easy it will be, but don't give you well laid out directions or even clear pictures of part x and part y, etc. Nice thing is, you can still figure it out in about 5-10 minutes of screwing around with it, and the thing does work fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Safe and Easy to use!, November 8, 2007
This review is from: Dex Products Universal Safe Sleeper Bed Rail (Baby Product)
We have used this bed rail for over a year with no problems. My son was 20 months when we started using it, he is in a full size bed with a box spring. I do agree that it is difficult to get it together the very first time, but I think that's why it is so safe. Once you get it together the first time, it stays in one piece even if you flip the mattress, etc.

To comment on a few previous reviews, I don't see any sharp edges that could injure a child, there is a metal piece that is covered with fabric that is very tightly pushed against the mattress side...it wouldn't touch the child. And that is one of the safety features, it keeps the child from falling in between the rail and the mattress. The previous poster probably didn't have the strap that goes under the mattress tight enough...that's the only way it wouldn't work that I can tell.

And ours definately folds all the way down at a 90 degree angle to make the bed, that is one of my favorite features. It has two releases that are easy enough for an adult to work but hard enough so a child (even mine) can't. When you bring it back up after making the bed, they snap into place so you know they are set.

Highly recommend and I am buying another one for the other side.

I have an Ikea bed frame from the Malm series for my daughter. I never thought we'd be able to have a bedrail that would fit, but thenagain, I thought since the bed was so low to the ground, she wouldn't need one. We didn't buy this for a matter of safety, we bought it for security. My daughter feels like she is back in her crib, but with more freedom. She wasn't sleeping though the night until we bought this, and it makes her feel a million times better.

This is easy to put together, and really honestly works for ALL beds. If it can work for my Ikea bed, it can work on any bed!

2.0 out of 5 stars Design flaw, August 31, 2009

This review is from: Dex Products Universal Safe Sleeper Bed Rail (Baby Product)
I have had this bedrail for exactly six months, and it broke at the plastic join between the rail and the support that goes under the bed. I have had two other bedrails for several years (the Munchkin Safety Deluxe Bed Rail and Summer Infant Sure and Secure Single Bedrail) -took a look at both of them and the joins are metal, not plastic.

As well, the Dex does not have straps that securely grasp the far side of the bed, next to the wall. Both the Munchkin & Summer Infant do, and are much more secure fits. I use them both on platform beds, so am disappointed that the Dex does not work properly. I am also disappointed in Dex customer service, who told me on the phone that they received my warranty request and photos of the broken bedrail via email and would be back to me; one week later, no response.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic & Sturdy, January 5, 2008
This review is from: Dex Products Universal Safe Sleeper Bed Rail (Baby Product)
This bed rail is fantastic! We just purchased it to replace the Summer Infant Sure & Secure Mesh Double Bedrail which was flimsy and has not held up for even 6 mos. We are using it on our 2 and a half year old boys twin size captain's bed. It was very easy to assemble and it looks great. It is at least twice as sturdy as the other one we had. The stabilizer bar in the middle is a great addition. It folds down easily and makes it simple to make the bed. I highly recommed this product!
