The wire is installed and riding in the groove of the board when the unit is boxed and shipped. Movement during shipping can bang the operating handle, which is connected to the installed wire. In my case, that caused the wire, which is restrained in the board's groove, to break (during shipping). I opened the box to find my new board in useless conditions, since the wire was broken and no spares are included. The wire should be shipped loose in the box and installed by the owner after opening. Spares should also be included. Ordering new wires from the manufacturer(I ordered 5)was simple, the wires were cheap and installation is easy. Still, the shipping/packaging people need to resolve the broken wire issue. Aside from that, the unit itself is pretty neat and receives a surprising number of compliments.

This item is brilliant in its simplicity. In today's litigious world, one really can't entertain without the Prodyne Beechwood CS/STwRCW. For years I have been nervous that one of my guests would hurt themselves with a knife while cutting a hunk of Jarlsburg or White Cheddar. The attached slicer takes away all of the worry. Thank you Prodyne!

P.S. The cheese slicer can also be used for olives and hard boiled eggs.

Since the reviews about broken wires were both written well over 1-2 years ago, I thought surely the problem had been corrected. Why would a company continue to sell a broken product? Well, apparently this company is perfectly fine doing just that! Like previous posters, the wire on my board arrived broken. There is no damage to the packing, so it is not a shipping issue. I ordered this product for a Superbowl party in a few days. Obviously I cannot use it. I haven't been able to find a number, just an address, so I can't even complain about it today. DO NOT ORDER THIS PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!

Amazon...wake up and quit allowing your customers to buy this item. It reflects poorly on you.

I ordered the cheese cutter and it arrived in good condition and was well packed. However, two weeks later the black plastic piece that holds the wire cracked. I believe this was just a fluke. I sent an e-mail to amazon and they immediately responded by sending me a new cutter at no charge which also arrived in great condition and return authorization and shipping labels to send the other one back. I am very happy with this cutter because it's large enough for a couple of cheeses and crackers and small enough to easily carry around. Don't put it in the dishwasher(it's wood and will split).

This is a great product, especially for starting a dinner party or a cheese & wine gathering. The recessed well has plenty of room for crackers or fruit, & the slicer slices cheese smoothly & efficiently. Plus, when the evening is over, you only have to wash one item!

I got this cheese cutter as a gift for my 80 year old mom, along with a selection of yummy cheeses. I was very pleased with the quality of this product. The wood is lovely and finished nicely and it really does slice cheese well. The convenience of having it double as a serving plate is really nice.

It's a shame that there are older negative reviews triggered by the broken wire issue that the manufacturer seems to have since resolved. A few minor adjustments (per the included instructions) and this baby was ready to cut the cheese!

Despite several critical reviews of this product, it was just what I was looking for; so I ordered 4 (3 for gifts).

The 4 arrived,individually boxed, in a single well packed shipping carton. All units were nicely finished.

AS THE INSTRUCTIONS EXPLAINED, THE UNITS ARE SHIPPED WITH THE CHEESE CUTTING WIRE ADJUSED TAUGHT AGAINST ONE SIDE OF THE CUTTING SLOT. A simple little wiggling of the cutting bar as explained in the directions is all it takes to readjust the wire to the center of the slot. All 4 units were readily adjusted. All units work perfectly.

My parents had one of these when I was a kid and I absolutely loved it, so when my boyfriend and I spotted the last one in Target, we snatched it up and used it like crazy! When I sent him on his way, I got the dog, he got the slicer and I have been on the lookout for a new slicer and a new boyfriend ever since! Don't know why I didn't think to check Amazon (for the slicer) since I buy everything else here. If it's as good as the last two I have had, I will be back in business! "Behold, the power of cheese!"

Get a bottle of red wine and enjoy this cheese/cracker serving tray.

If you're putting it out for a party make sure you place some tongs nearby so people don't use bare hands on the cheese. Especially during cold & flu season. It's also a good idea to slice a few slices off so people can see how it works.

My husband and I recieved this as a wedding shower gift. We use it all the time. It is a great thing to have for entertaining - we've had it for two years now and it works great. We get many compliments on it and will be giving it for gifts in the future.
