4.0 out of 5 stars Functional and aesthetically pleasing
Summary:
Overall, I like the design and my particular use of the carafe and plan to purchase another one. Pros: good design, sturdy, leakproof. Cons: Jar has screw threads, therefore cannot display alone without lid; spout cover may lose its tight seal over time.

These carafes are like artwork in the refrigerator. The acrylic jar is sturdy and easy to handle even when full.

Washing has not been a problem as long as the contents aren't allowed to dry (meaning rinse it out as soon as it becomes empty).

The worst part about this product is the lid. The flip-top lid does not stay open unless it's pushed all the way back. Then, when pouring, the contents splashes because there's no vent hole in the lid. Lastly, the shape of the lip on the lid causes a small, but very noticeable amount of liquid to remain on the lid, which unfortunately turns into a gross and crusty mess very quickly. I would recommend keeping a towel or rag near-by to wipe off the lid after each use.

Update - 3 months after purchase

I purchased several of these carafes and in just 3 months one has been discarded because it cracked on the bottom and began to leak, while all the others have developed cracks in the neck. I would strongly recommend against purchasing this product for refrigerated liquids.

It seems to be more well suited as a serving container that will be used for an event and then emptied before being stored.

The acrylic carafe looks as it does in the photo.

I am using this "juice jar" for plain water as a covered carafe at the office and on my nightstand, so I cannot comment on issues related to other drinks. (For example, I would imagine that like any glass or plastic container, there might be staining from juices, acid, or milk after a while.)

The 36 oz jar is about 12-14 inches high. It's around 3 inches diameter at the base.

The carafe itself has very clean lines with virtually no visible seams, so when it sits on the table, it looks like glass. The acrylic bottle itself is sturdy and feels smooth. When filled, it does not tip over easily because of the wide bottom. I love the shape because it reminds me of the cafes in France where one could always get a glass carafe of tap water upon request.

Because the lid is a screwtop, the screw threads are on the mouth of the bottle, just like a glass jar. Still, I would not mind putting this jar--with or without lid--on the dining table to serve water or lemonade. Though I was considering a real glass carafe:

The Wine Enthusiast U-Shaped 5-pc. Wine Set

Royal VKB French Glass Carafe VKBA 0008

Riedel Vivant 3-pc. Wine Set

Anyway, I digress.

The Prodyne juice jar lid has a pouring hole covered by a smaller flip top with a clear rubber stopper that is supposed to seal the opening. Mine seals it well enough that if I slowly turn the bottle upside down, it is leakproof. However, it is not a tight seal, so I think that over time, it will eventually loosen and not be as secure. Even right now, I wouldn't want to knock the bottle over, because it will likely cause the flip top to fall open.

Since I'm using the carafe as a water pitcher, I haven't needed to scrub it. To do so would require a bottle brush, as the neck is wide enough for an ice cube, but too narrow to put an adult hand in. Watch out for small children who can get their hands stuck, though. Common sense for acrylic: rinse it out immediately after using for other beverages and don't leave colored drinks in there for too long.

For the purpose that I'm using it, though, I am quite happy with it.

Fantastic for ice water, and even without the lid, your cat can't sneak up and drink out of it. Great price, great design, don't put it in the dishwasher if you want it to last forever, but I found it to be the perfect nightstand ice water receptacle! I have 5 of them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Impossible to wash!!!, February 26, 2010
This review is from: Prodyne Acrylic Juice Jar (Kitchen)
For one thing I found this in a retail store and the regular price was $7.99.
This splashes when you poor unless you hold the cup up to the pitcher.
One feedback left said it was great for water and that may be true.
Will this fit in your refrigerator?
If you put it through the dishwasher(if it will fit and it will
have to go on the bottom rack which is not recommented for plastic) If you hand wash
which is recommended there is no brush long enough and the neck is to slim for your
hand to fit inside. Looks nice but not user friendly!

4.0 out of 5 stars refrigerator carafe, February 3, 2010

This item was recommended in an article I read. I purchased several all at once. The are nice and slim, are a pleasure to hold, but they do not pour well out of the screw top. Since I have already purchased several, I will keep them and take the screw top off when pouring.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality and function, May 12, 2011

Plastic is cracking after only having 2 weeks. hand washed even. Evidently cannot withstand soapy hot water washes. 2nd problem is there is no back air release, so everything splashes when being poured with lid on. Also plastic lid is staining from contents. Never had this issue with other plastic pitchers. And last week I found this item at a local retailer for less than $7.00.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but could be better., April 18, 2011

I purchased this item to store juice in the fridge. It does this very well. The issue I have with the product is the width of the neck and the lid design. The neck is too narrow to slide down the contents of a can of frozen juice, you either have to thaw it or spoon the frozen concentrate. The lid has a couple issues. The first is that when pouring the opening makes the juice slosh and splash everywhere unless I'm extra careful. I don't like cleaning juice off the counter. The other issue is after your pour, there is always a few drops stuck on the lid. I shouldn't have to rinse off the lid every time I want a drink.

I would have preferred glass over acrylic but money talks and I expect it to be just a little bit more portable for when I move.

I have both sizes of this carafe and really like them. They fit on refrigerator doors and look great. But after about 6 months we noticed cracks in the necks. It's been about 4 months since that and they haven't leaked yet.

My only problem with the larger one is that it was too tall to fit on a shelf in the fridge. I have to put it on the door where I have room for extra tall containers. They are very handsome and I love being able to pour juice in them when the box is half empty. They look pretty form fridge to table.
