Product Description

The Santa Medical non-contact infrared (IR) clinical thermometer provides a simple, expedient, and accurate way for initial fever screenings by taking the temperature of areas on the face such as the forehead or tear ducts. It obtains the body temperature reading with 0.3 degree accuracy in less than 1 second. The Santa Medical IR thermometer features an intuitive guidance system to secure positioning and confirm accurate readings. Temperatures (Fahrenheit or Celsius) are displayed on a huge back-lit LCD screen for easier reading even in total darkness. Adjustable audio alarm will alert you if the temperature is too high. Since there is no contamination risk, one can immediately start again to scan the temperature of other family members or individuals without having to disinfect or changing the tip. Santa Medical Thermometer was designed specifically for forehead temperature detection from a 1"-4" (5-15cm) distance with an 89-109 F(32.0-43.0C) temperature range. Unlike other IR thermometers that only measure surface temperature, Santa Medical Thermometer is clinically calibrated to convert the forehead temperature reading(external surface) into internal body temperature which is one of the most important vital signs for human being. It can also store 32 temperature readings for future reference. The bright back-lit LCD screen displays readings even in darkness. A sleeping baby or patient will not be disturbed by the Thermometer as it is used nor will it cause any discomfort if they are awake. For public health authorities, it provides a simple, quick, Non-contact, and non-invasive way to perform preliminary mass-screening for H1N1 fever (swine flu) infection symptoms (body temperatures above 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 37 degrees Celsius). Santa Medical Thermometer can take over 100,000 readings on a single set of 2 AA batteries (included). With its rugged, impact and water resistant design, it is able to take over 3,000,000 measurements in the product's lifetime.

Even though the instructions clearly warn that this device must not be dropped, I managed to drop it three times on a wood floor within one-half hour of opening the box. Didn't faze it. I'm a registered nurse, and I've used it now for a month of daily home health visits. It's fast, easy to use, and my patients like it very much, since they don't have to have anything stuck in their mouths, ears, or dragged across their makeup. I tested it's accuracy against an electronic probe thermometer using cups of water heated in the microwave, and the widest difference between the two was around 0.2 degrees in 108 degree water. I've noticed that it records higher temperatures at the earlobe site than the eyebrow area, sometimes as much as 2 degrees, which is consistent with other measuring devices I've used. I like it very much, and I've experienced zero problems with it.

My family got the flu recently and we fought to use one single oral thermometer. I got tired of disinfecting it and decided to look for a replacement that allows easy sharing and quick reading. I have tried the ear thermometer and found it not too comfortable and difficult to get an accurate reading and it requires a lens filter for each use. This SantaMedical RY230 seemed to have all the attributes I want so I decided to give it a try.

When it was delivered earlier this week, I quickly gave it a test run and found that it was off by more than 1°F on my first try. I was very disappointed. Upon reading the user manual, I found that it had to acclimatize to the ambient temperature for 15 to 20 minutes before use. After acclimatization, the readings were closer but still 0.6°F lower than the temperatures registered by my tried and true oral thermometer. I contacted the seller through email and was told that I could enter an adjustment, which is called "Total Difference" in the user manual. Up to plus or minus 3°C can be entered for the total difference. However, the procedure as presented in the user manual to set the Total Difference was incorrect and I had to contact the seller again. While waiting for the seller to respond, I figured out how to set the Total Difference: Turn on the RY230 by pressing the Scan button (referred to as the measuring key in the manual). Press and hold both the "Mode" and "°C/°F" keys simultaneously until the display shows "F-4". Release both keys and the unit is now ready for setting Total Difference. Pressing the "Mode" key each time will increase the adjustment by 0.1°C while pressing the "°C/°F " Key will decrease the adjustment by 0.1°C. Pressing the "Mem" key will save the setting and reset the thermometer.

My wife and I bought this as a gift for someone else for the convenience of speed and use, but ended up keeping it. While not condoning the first part, we were really impressed with the ease of use of this thermometer. My wife liked that it was intuitivet o get multiple consistent readings right out of the box in a few seconds. I liked that in the long term, it conveniently used AA batteries in addition. It is also very simple to read on the display in light or dark.

This is a great investment and definite improvement over the drugstore thermometers out there. You minimize on sanitations concerns of oral thermometers and, so far, we've received more consistent readings in shorter time than the under-the-arm digital thermometers as well.

The RY230 has a host of other features, but for everyday use with our family (rather, when-we're-possibly-sick-use), we haven't found a need for memory of multiple readings, etc. The basic functions it handles well enough to justify it's value and pricepoint.

- Ron

P.S. -- We ended up getting the "someone else" a gift as lovely. =)

I was looking for a portable device that I wouldn't have to constantly buy covers for as it comes out of my own pocket. This thermometer is easy to use and works great but you need to READ the instructions! Initially I wasn't waiting enough time between confirmation readings and so I kept getting different results....once I waited the recommended time, my results were consistent. It is professional looking and not so small it will get lost but not so big that it takes up a ton of space in my bag. The display is a easy to read, too. You can also use it to check the temp of liquids and surfaces, too, which is a neat feature. Shipping was fast! Would def recommend!

Knowing my oral digital thermometer was not reading correctly, I sought to find a reasonably priced, easy-to-use thermometer to take its place. I first looked at the ones used on the ear canal, but decided using it on myself might present aiming problems, and with those, aiming is everything. After a little more research, I stumbled across the RY230 Non-contact Infrared Thermometer and decided to take a chance. I am happy to report it was a chance worth taking! A no-hassle temperature reading in a matter of seconds. I took it to my health care provider and he was really impressed with the speed and accuracy of the unit. It was a technology he was not familiar with, but I do see him introducing it as an option at the local clinic, as well as something new in his array of medical gadgets. Trust me, if it meets his standards, it will definitely meet yours.
