Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Great gardens are more than just the sum of their parts. Trees, shrubs, perennials, container plants: these constitute the cast of stars whose artistry is augmented by secondary players. From lounge chairs to dining tables, wooden benches to woven hammocks, the accoutrements of a garden setting should be as carefully selected as the plants they complement. A former interior designer, Nagel uses her discerning eye to apply the essential principles of form and function to style and materials in determining good exterior decor for the home landscape. With a goal of helping homeowners make informed choices that will enable them to select high-quality furnishings and accent pieces, and thus avoid wasting time, resources, and money, Nagel gives a thorough overview of architectural periods, contemporary trends, and material construction and maintenance. Chapters geared toward the professional elevate this comprehensive guidebook to a higher level even as Nagel’s approach makes it an accessible reference for the novice garden decorator as well. --Carol Haggas

Review

“Chapters geared toward the professional elevate this comprehensive guidebook to a higher level even as Nagel’s approach makes it an accessible reference for the novice garden decorator.”

(Landscape Architecture Magazine)

“Vanessa Gardner Nagel has written this colorful and quite thorough guide to the materials and the supply chain in specifying outdoor furniture, fabrics, containers, and other fixtures. Her good sense advice can save you any number of calls from irritated clients.”

(Library Journal)

"This book is an aid and inspiration for design professionals and students of the field. Considerations for outdoor furnishing purchases are clearly broken down. The list of resources Nagel provides is valuable, no matter the skill level of the reader."

Vanessa Gardner Nagels book is an excellent guide for homeowners and professional landscape designers alike. Now that we are using our outdoor spaces as rooms and places to sit and relax or host gatherings we are finding we need furnishings that suit the space. I was so inspired and got so many excellent ideas. This book is now part of my resource library.

I haven't read it, but I flipped through it and looked at the pictures. The pictures are inspiring. I can not wait until I have a backyard patio to decorate!

More About the Author

Author Vanessa Gardner Nagel, APLD, NCIDQ, is an award-winning, eco-conscious garden designer, and the owner of Seasons Garden Design LLC. Her newest book, 'The Professional Designer's Guide to Garden Furnishings' is a must-have resource for landscape designers, landscape architects, interior designers, and architects. It provides so many alternatives to the Adirondack chair, that she suspects that chair may lose its status as the default garden chair. Vanessa's first book, 'Understanding Garden Design: The Complete Handbook for Aspiring Designers' was released In 2010 and describes the complete process of garden design in terms anyone can understand. It covers topics like what happens before design actually begins, working with contractors to construct your garden, and even open garden etiquette (because its amazing how many people need it).

Vanessa became infatuated with plants as a youngster at her grandfather's side in Minnesota and subsequently learned the art of weeding in her mother's garden in California. She is a certified member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers and on their international board, was the 2009 Oregon Chapter president, and served her community as a design review committee member for the City of Vancouver for 6 years. Vanessa has over 33 years design experience including 22 years of commercial interior design projects from the west coast, in the U.S.A. and around the world, as well as Pacific Northwest landscape design projects. She also taught as an adjunct faculty member at Marylhurst University and Portland Community College. Vanessa continues weeding her own garden, Dragonfly Hollow which she occasionally opens to the public to benefit local organizations.

Vanessa has won various awards, including an Award of Excellence for Sunset Magazine's 2004 Landscape Design Competition. During her interior design career, Vanessa was certified by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) and was an Oregon-chapter president of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA).
