2.0 out of 5 stars very surprised at such high reviews
I excitedly ordered this book after reading all of the glowing and enthusiastic reviews. The author came to my company to give a workshop/presentation on her book and concepts, but I was unable to attend. I did, however order the book. I'm in a professional rut; stuck in a job I dislike and find completely uninspiring and increasingly unpalatable. The problem is that I...

Life is full of changes. We all know that. This book embraces those changes and offers readers a way to really grasp them and make the best of the potential changes using thought processes that are really accurate. Think you're alone in trying to map out your destiny? Not so, especially in this book, when the examples of life stories of people who have transformed their lives are found here in this book to absorb. This book is accessible enough to sit down and read it all at once on an international plane flight, or the perfect Sunday. Yet, if you are like me, you'll highlight passages, make notes in the margin and dog ear pages to read and re-read. It's that good. This the most exciting self help book, told with professionally motivating stories, that I've seen in a long time. Every worker in every office should be required to read this.

The "Killer Combo" theory drastically changed my way of thinking. The simple shift it allowed has freed me from limiting thoughts, perspectives and actions. It is my go-to "thought net" when the proverbial fork shows itself along the road I've always known I was intended to traverse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional Destiny, so refreshing, October 6, 2009

This review is from: Professional Destiny (Paperback)
I found this book to be both refreshing and inspiring. It is straightforward and incredibly digestible. While many of the principles in this book are soul delving in nature, the author presents them in a way that makes them immediately accessible and painlessly applicable. After reading the book, I had a sense of renewed spirit and a clarity of thinking that I seldom experience. The insight within helped me pinpoint and articulate a tangible vision for my professional destiny. With an identifiable vision, I am feeling more empowered than ever to start taking steps to make that vision a reality. This is a great tool and an insightful gift that I will be passing along to others!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Eye Opening Book, July 21, 2009
This review is from: Professional Destiny (Paperback)
This wonderful book was recommended by a good friend of mine and from almost page one, I was wowed. It was like this book was written for me at this juncture in my life. How fortuitous! It also helped me realize that I was not the only one struggling with my daily choice, my back and forth dance of "should I do it or should I not?". I was also touched by how Valerie is so honest about her emotional state during her process of letting go a very prestigious and lucrative position at a top firm. It touched me deeply to know that I was not alone in my doubts and fears. Thank you Valerie (I call her on first name basis because she feels like a confident to me now after reading her book) for reviving my faith in myself and my ultimate goal of helping other people on their difficult path to health. Alain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Power & Peace Inc., July 17, 2009
This review is from: Professional Destiny (Paperback)
For the past 25 years as a consultant I have watched hundreds of people feeling frustrated about their job. Most of them were basically going through the motions with very little satisfaction or joy and also feeling resigned about what to do to change it. It is always so painful to see people in a life long career that does not fulfill them. I am so happy now that I finally have a book that I can give to them and say "READ THIS BOOK!" I know that Professional Destiny with help to put thousands of people on the right track to having a glorious career. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Might change your thinking!, July 10, 2009
By
Ken (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Professional Destiny (Paperback)
I like to think I'm a fairly intelligent and together person when it comes to life and career, and that I have a pretty good sense of who I am and where I'm going. I wouldn't expect that any book on this topic could change my thinking too significantly. So it is with a bit of humility that I say -- (cough, stutter) -- this book changed my thinking. Valerie Hausladen has a disarmingly inviting way of writing, yet she offers great insight about the most profound decisions most of us will ever make. This book is about finding a lifelong career that lets you make the most of the talents, interests and skills you were born with. If this sounds like something we all do anyway, just look at the cubicles around you -- not exactly a sea of joy and satisfaction out there, with people "doing their life's work." This book tackles the big questions head-on: how do we find our gift (it's not always obvious), and how do we find a career that lets us make the most of it? Don't expect any mumbo-jumbo or deep psychological self-analysis. It turns out that the answers aren't hidden at all -- we just need some friendly advice from someone with a wealth of life experiences to point us in the right direction. That's what you'll get from this book. At a time when so many people are making new career decisions (and not always by choice!), I'm going to be giving out a lot of copies of Professional Destiny this holiday season.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye Opening and Life Changing, September 30, 2009

There are quite a few things that I love about this book. And I think its best to enumerate in order to better digest the key points that, in my mind, make this book so unique:

1. Its written in a style as though the author is sitting right next to you speaking to you. You dont feel like you are being "talked at" or even "talked down to", you feel like you are not only being spoken to, but also listened to as well. Valerie gives examples of how she has felt and puts herself in your shoes or vice versa. She is not afraid to show her vulnerability, which is incredibly rare in the industry she has worked in for most of her life. I know this b/c I have worked in the same one. That is how I met her.

2. Having met with Valerie made it even more helpful when reading her book because I knew she wasnt just spouting rhetoric. She is living what she is writing. This is not a "self help" book that sends the message of "Do as I say, not as I do". And because of this, she has inspired me greatly. She has helped remove my fears about my purpose, who I "really" am, and helped to accept myself and my talents as positives. She really made me see myself in a positive light.

3. This is one of those books that can serve as a quick reference book. One that can either be read over and over again (like "Who Moved My Cheese?") or the reader can just go back to specific sections or chapters to remind themselves of important messages possibly forgotten.

4. Finally, her use of quotations for every chapter gives the reader a feeling of hope. Many of us reading the book may feel alone in our quest, afraid of change, and maybe afraid of ourselves. But with Valerie's writing style as well as the use of quotations, you know you are not alone. Each quotation, so carefully chosen, reinforces her message and makes the reader feel like they are not some freak, but truly a part of the world around them. A true participant in the human race, who wants the same thing as everyone else: happiness, a feeling of fullness and satisfaction in our every day life, self confidence, and empowerment.

Thanks Valerie, for giving a part of yourself to the rest of us. The world can always use inspiration like this. I know I can and it has propelled me from unemployment to self employment. Something that I was sure I would never do again because I failed the first time. But this time, I know its different and your wisdom has helped me discern between the two.

Fantastic! I thought it was going to be a quick read (144 pages), but was far too thought-provoking to breeze through in a few hours. I'm energized by Valerie's passion and I look forward to defining my own PD in the up-coming months!
