Work all the problems in this book and the NCEES practice CE Construction book and you will have a very good understanding of the material on the test.

At the time, this was the only book out there for the CM portion of the PE exam...it may or may not be when you read this.

I bought this book along with the practice problems book a couple of weeks ago and received them last week, so this review is only based on that duration.

I am going to take the construction module for the 2nd time this October. I had little time to prepare for the first one, relying mainly on the CERM and CE handbook. Those manuals have a lot of information covering the CE field. I have been out of college for 10+ years and I work mainly in the structural and project management side of things. Subjects like water resources and traffic I have not dealt with in 15 years. The manuals will have formulas but will not teach you how to arrive at a solution. Obviously you should be able to work problems in the specific field you work in, but for the stuff you're not likely going to touch at your job, a crash course is what you need. If you are going to be licensed you need to know the how's and why's.

The CE PE Construction module looks to be a very good teaching book, based on my survey of the material covered in the book, reading and working problems from the first 30 pages, and knowledge of what is on the actual test. It has plenty of step by step solutions - not a lot of "where did this come from?".

This book hits heavily on geotech, surveying, scheduling, temp structures, OSHA, material removal, eng economics, and project management. It touches on structural, concrete, and traffic (horizontal & vertical curves). No water, hydrology, waste water, or traffic sight distances/ requirements. So you will need other references (CERM or the like) for the things not covered.

The cons of the book is the layout and a typos.
1)There are no chapters and some subjects change mid page.

An excellent Study aide for the Professional Engineering Civil Construction Module A complete, step-by-step solution is provided for each problem. The Author approaches the material clearly and in a comprehensive manner he presents all of the basic to advanced concepts that you will experience in the afternoon construction module. The text provides you with the problem-solving practice you need to successfully prepare for the exam. It is a complete study guide, covering subjects such as: Earthwork Construction and Layout, Estimating Quantities and Cost, Construction Operations and Methods, Scheduling, Material Quality Control, and Production, Temporary Structures, Worker Health and Safety and Environment, and other relevant special topics. The subject matter is presented in a clear and concise manner utilizing real-world Illustrations and accurate drawings, which are present throughout this text. The problems selected make this reference book useful to the reader before and after the exam; after the exam, it can be utilized as a tool in the practice of Professional Engineering.

I'm currently studying for my PE Exam. I plan to take the construction specific test. The other review books don’t cover the construction test very well, so I tried out this book by Ruwan Rajapakse. It became apparent very quickly that English is not Mr. Rajapakse’s first language. Civil engineers are not known for their command of the English language, but come on! A lot of the book is written with broken English. About 80% of the examples refer to “Contractor” as if it is somebody’s name. Page 167 - “Concrete itself do not have tensile strength. Tensile strength for concrete is provided by reinforcing bars or simply known as rebars. Below table provide rebar sizes and weight per foot.” Did anyone read this before they published it?!?! How could these errors make it to the 4th edition?!?! I would be embarrassed to put my name on something with this many errors. Also, don’t think that this is not isolated to any single part of the book. These types of errors are everywhere and I personally find them extremely distracting.

If you can get past the hundreds of typographical errors, the content is fine. The author jumps around somewhat erratically at some points, but overall I find the content average. I have not taken the exam yet, but it seems like a lot of the concepts are not covered in adequate depth. If i had it to do over again, I would look for a different book.

The book provided a good general review of the subject matter. Lacks a bit on the details and explanations for the problems. Also had many spelling errors.

Bought 1st edition and 2nd edition from the author. He changed and added couple examples to justify his reasoning for the update. The third edition is not an exception to his way of money making business. I recommend any potential buyers to go to a local book store and compare his books. They are "very" similar. If you want to have a piece of mind of owning a construction study for the afternoon module. It's better to buy something else or buy used first edition for a penny. Do not waste hard earned money on this.

This book is a great companion to the Construction Practice Problems book. In studying it, you will find a variety of problems very similar to those found in the PE exam. If you study this book and understand it, you will pass the exam.
