5.0 out of 5 stars Opens Up the Inside of Your Server, August 6, 2006
This review is from: Professional MOM 2005, SMS 2003, and WSUS (Paperback)
As you sit there watching your server doing its thing, you kind of have to wonder just what's going on inside the box. Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), Systems Management Server (SMS) and Windows System Update Services are packages that Microsoft has developed to provide you with a view into what's going on inside the box.

The book does not presume that the reader have any particular skill or knowledge, but this whole subject is not something that you'd assign to the complete newbie. You'll need some idea of the structure of the operating system, the basic way it works, and certainly the nomenclature of Microsoft's systems.

This book is intended to be a single source for IT administrators to understand and use these tools in their environment. What I found was that these systems are capable of a lot more things that I understood before reading the book. A couple of them have proved quite useful in solving a couple of problems I had but didn't know where to look. I'd recommend the book to anyone running a Microsoft server.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview for admins, April 6, 2007
By
This review is from: Professional MOM 2005, SMS 2003, and WSUS (Paperback)
This book provides a good overview of MS systems management. As an admin, I want to know how these tools fit together and get some detail on what I could do with MOM and SMS. This book fits the bill. Looking forward to a revision after the release of Ops Manager and Configuration Manager.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not enough and not properly organized, March 26, 2007
This review is from: Professional MOM 2005, SMS 2003, and WSUS (Paperback)
I particularly bought this book for MOM 2005 setup\configuration and found that this book wasn't I expected to be. First, it doesn't go deep in explaining configuration of management packs. Second, it is poorly organized. Author is jumping back and forth between configuration topics and that is very annoying. If your goal is to learn MOM 2005 thoroughly then your money is well spent somewhere else. It is better to read Microsoft documentation on MOM 2005 than this book. The book is simply too small to cover all three topics.
