Don't waste thousands of dollars on classes!,
By "artemissin" (Wichita Kansas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Professional Model's Handbook (Paperback)
If you are interested in modeling, & have considered paying a school for classes ... DON'T! This book will teach you the things you need to know for far less than the schools would charge you. The book may sound expensive, but not when you compare it to the $2000 + the schools want to charge you. You will learn how to pose, how to walk, how to apply your make-up & do your hair (you may think you know that already, but in modeling there is so much more to it), it will basicly give you all the things you need to know to get started in modeling. I just cant say enough about how wonderful I feel this book is!

The Best Modeling Book Out There!,
By Jennifer (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Professional Model's Handbook (Paperback)
I've read many modeling books, but I think that this book is the best because it gives you information about make-up, hair, photo sessions, analyzing your face, agency information, and etc. There is so much information in here that I had to read at least 5 books for. I bought this book after 2 years of modeling and I wish I had read it when I was starting out. This is a great book to add to your collection and if you are a model you should always be reading books and studying your field. Don't get started until you are absolutely sure this is what you want and you know everything about the industry. Good Luck!

Excellent source book, but getting dated,
By Model Agent (New York City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Professional Model's Handbook (Paperback)
This is by far the most complete source of information of use to a professional fashion model that is currently in print. Much of the exhaustive material here is unique to this book (at least among modeling books). It is dense reading, targetted at those willing to invest the time to really understand the industry they are in. It's priced like a textbook, and worth every dollar to those serious about the fashion modeling industry.
It is dated (published in 1990), so much of the material on makeup and styling is out of date. But that's not what is most important about this book. If you want to try to learn makeup and posing techniques, get another, more recent book. If you want to learn things that only pros know about the industry, get this one.

A very professional book for the professional model,

This review is from: The Professional Model's Handbook (Paperback)
If you are someone interested in getting into the modeling field this book definitely would be essencial for your home library. I am a modeling instructor and each time I prepared my modeling lesson this book is with me. It teaches me lots of ideas for my students, from how to start in the modeling business, creating an image, everything and anything about runway, careers, makeup techniques, agencies and how to market yourself, etc... The pictures are a little old fashion, black and white and the fonts used in this book are very small making it more difficult sometimes to read, maybe because it has so much information, but it is very simple to understand everything. I do recommend this book to anyone. I do recommend my students to buy it, it is a little expensive but it is worth it!

Unlike anything else you'll ever find...,
By Kim (MN, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Professional Model's Handbook (Paperback)
When I got this book I was interested in becoming a model, not knowing anything about the business or how to get started. It took me a long time to finish the book because I was busy taking notes and there is so much information to take in. The book doesn't miss a thing! Everything you ever need to know about starting into a business like this is in there. Things from what you need to get started, proper poses, information on the financial side of things, hair/makeup application, walking, and checklists for what you need to buy. The price of this book was well worth it. I have read other modeling books and they do not come close to this one. Although I recommend this book over all the others out there, it is a little out of date. Even knowing this, anyone truly interested in knowing all you can before starting your modeling career should invest in this book. Have fun reading!

The basis for my agency,
By Ms Raji (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Professional Model's Handbook (Paperback)
I previously reviewed Model by Michael Gross and stated that it gave me insight into the modeling industry that 2 years worth of research didn't. This book, The Model's Handbook, was the basis of me fully understanding the business side of the modeling industry. Between The Model's Handbook and Model, Handbook is the college lesson/ class that greatly aided my knowledge of the industry enough to be comfortable opening my own agency, and Model was the street education that has told me what I need to look out for in my pursuit. Anyone who reads this handbook MUST read Model (and Amazon carries it! ). I recommend both firmly.

Great book for overall view of Professional Modeling,

This review is from: The Professional Model's Handbook (Paperback)
As a modeling instructor, I used this book to teach students most of what they needed to know to get work as a model -- informal modeling, runway modeling, photography, makeup... It was a great resource, too, for friends or their kids who were interested in the field but weren't sure what they may be getting into. It even includes tips like what to do to prepare for a show, what to bring with you to a show, going on interviews, etc. Includes a section on legal documents, too. A realistic overall modeling guide and handbook.

A detailed book to tell you exactly what you need to know.,

This review is from: The Professional Model's Handbook (Paperback)
I love this book. I read it constantly to psyche myself up for the future. It tells everything about the modeling world - a list of symbols for runway choreography, recipes for body care, what to carry with you, how to interview, and everything else from start to finish. The pictures are drawn however and are a bit 80's looking (even though it was written in the 90's)but the book is more about learning than hearing amazing stories. Its a how to guide that goes into amazing detail. I recomend it for those who want to know about how to act and what to do in the modeling world.

A tired, dated analysis...,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Professional Model's Handbook (Paperback)
Balhorn's explicit exploration of the intricacies of the (mainly American) modelling world seem perfect for the brash mid 1980's surge in modelling interest and public obsession, yet seems almost comically isolated in today's understated chic that the industry is based upon.
