5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible
As a big fan of Carl Caylor and having been privileged to spend a week as one of his students at the Texas School of Photography, I'm a bit biased. He is an outstanding photographer, teacher, and one of the most down to earth and big hearted artist I've had the pleasure of meeting in my life. His DVD set is also an extremely valuable instructional aid. As far as the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Disapointed about the content
Hi,

I have bought this book because of the auspicious sub title "techniques and images from master photographers".
But after reading the book I must summarize, that there aren't any techniques explained at all on how do good portraits.

The photos are outstanding, no questions. But there is absolutly no information about how these portraits...

5.0 out of 5 stars Portrait Photography At Its Best, May 5, 2008
This review is from: Professional Portrait Photography: Techniques and Images from Master Photographers (Pro Photo Workshop) (Paperback)
Lou Jacobs Jr. investigates the art of portrait photography with ten top photographers in the field. Beth Forester, Chris Nelson and Carl Caylor, to name a few, are interviewed and a diversity of style and technique is uncovered. This book is a rich source of information for one to help create their own standards for portrait photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Collection, May 18, 2009

The previous reviewer felt that this book wasn't strong on technique, but I'd have to beg to differ. Reading each of these chapters is like sitting down to a long lunch with the photographer. I guess it's true that you probably won't discuss specific light placement and such . . . but you'll still learn a lot about their creative approach, how they market their work, how they work with clients, and more. Those are all techniques that can make or break you in professional photography.

Hi,

I have bought this book because of the auspicious sub title "techniques and images from master photographers".
But after reading the book I must summarize, that there aren't any techniques explained at all on how do good portraits.

The photos are outstanding, no questions. But there is absolutly no information about how these portraits were made. Nothing to learn from the master photographers.
The whole book is a collections of some kind of interview with them, what their vitae is, what cameras / lenses they prefere, how they find locations and so on.

Might be interesting but it is on such a general level that it is nothing more than a nice talk.

I cannot understand the first two 5 star ratings of this book. There is nothing to benefit from it.
