4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a good resource
While this book certainly has a lot of good nuggets, it doesn't quite measure up to the "gold standard" of Vic Orenstein. Nonetheless, as an amateur child photographer who is trying to glean as much info as possible, I definitely got a lot out of Box's discussion of techniques. 2.0 out of 5 stars I didn't care for this book
This book is somewhat lacking for me. It didn't have anything specific about children photography. I do not really recommend this book if you have books on basic lighting, posing, or other specific area of photography because that's all this book covers. Keep your money and purchase some other book on photography children.

Nonetheless, as an amateur child photographer who is trying to glean as much info as possible, I definitely got a lot out of Box's discussion of techniques. He basically presents 50 of his photos, and tells the "story" of how he shot each one, complete with lighting diagrams and how he interacted with the kids. Also very helpful is his resource section at the end which gives contact info for his favorite vendors of photo supplies and accessories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional Secrets for Photographing Children, July 3, 2000
By
Denise Clay (North Carolina) - See all my reviews
The most inspirational photography book I have read. This book is the manual for all photographers who desire to create heirloom style portraits of children instead of the standard studio shots. Doug has filled the book full of photographs and the necessary information to produce such lovely imagery. Through out the book, Doug has included helpful hints on how to get the results you want while working with children. This book will be a reference of mine for years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's second to another book, January 29, 2000
Although this book was very informative and contained interesting photographs with descriptions and techniques used, I prefer Vik Orenstein's "Creative Techniques for Photographing Children". I think Box's book is a great read, but if I had to choose between the two, I'd go with Orenstein's book. Don't let the hand-colored bit scare you off - the book is about photography and the hand coloring is not a big part of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book!, October 23, 2000
This book was very helpful to me! Mr. Box not only shows how to set up lights, background, and camera for the picture, he also tells how to talk to children and get them relaxed to take pictures. I love to photograph children, and it's very difficult to get many children to look natural in a pose. Mr. Box gives suggestions on how to get the child to pose naturally, and how to get a beautiful picture that shows the child's personality. His tips on lights and lighting were very helpful to me. This is the best book on child photography that I've read so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners, September 6, 2005

I am a fledging photographer/hobbist and I gained some very good ideas about lighting and arrangements for portraits. I cannot tell you what should be a standard, but for a fairly new photographer, this book helped.

5.0 out of 5 stars very great book!, April 5, 2008
This review is from: Professional Secrets for Photographing Children (Paperback)
this is a great book on photographing children. I bought this by a friend's recommendation, and was not disppointed. Douglas Box goes picture by picture, telling you how to achieve certain results. He even tells you how to act to get different responses. I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this book. It is an easy read, and is easy to go back and find a certain topic. I am very glad I bought it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, not quite enough motivation, March 29, 2008

This is an okay book. It's biggest shortcoming is that many of the examples don't teach me anything. I read through the descriptions and they are okay, but not enlightening. Some of the pictures aren't really that good either. So it's an okay book. Not one I'm likely to read more than once, though.

On the other hand, once your wife buys this book you can argue that she's the one suggesting you get a Hasselblad with a 100mm lens and two flashes... which is the standard setup in this book.

I think the info in this book is rather old and it is not as informative as I thought/hoped it would be. There are a few good tips, but I wouldn't reccomend buying it...find a different book.
