Book Description

October 1, 2001 Photot
Photographing children can be a challenge, requiring patience and a healthy dose of playfulness. This book works through nearly 60 images, providing lighting diagrams and step-by-step instructions for using poses, props, and backgrounds that help make photographing children easier. Tips are given on how to choose clothing that best focuses the viewer’s attention on the child, photographic techniques used to capture images, and psychology used when working with children—such as never scheduling a portrait session near nap or mealtimes. Included are tips for good exposure, equipment selection, use of light meters and lighting, outdoor situations, and special-occasion photography.

While this book certainly has a lot of good nuggets, it doesn't quite measure up to the "gold standard" of Vic Orenstein. Nonetheless, as an amateur child photographer who is trying to glean as much info as possible, I definitely got a lot out of Box's discussion of techniques. He basically presents 50 of his photos, and tells the "story" of how he shot each one, complete with lighting diagrams and how he interacted with the kids. Also very helpful is his resource section at the end which gives contact info for his favorite vendors of photo supplies and accessories.

The most inspirational photography book I have read. This book is the manual for all photographers who desire to create heirloom style portraits of children instead of the standard studio shots. Doug has filled the book full of photographs and the necessary information to produce such lovely imagery. Through out the book, Doug has included helpful hints on how to get the results you want while working with children. This book will be a reference of mine for years to come.

It's second to another book January 29, 2000
Format:Paperback
Although this book was very informative and contained interesting photographs with descriptions and techniques used, I prefer Vik Orenstein's "Creative Techniques for Photographing Children". I think Box's book is a great read, but if I had to choose between the two, I'd go with Orenstein's book. Don't let the hand-colored bit scare you off - the book is about photography and the hand coloring is not a big part of the book.

Ok, not quite enough motivation
This is an okay book. It's biggest shortcoming is that many of the examples don't teach me anything. I read through the descriptions and they are okay, but not enlightening. Read more
