Book Description

Programmer to Programmer September 2000
This book deals with the many issues involved in making the transition from Access to MS SQL Server. While Access (part of the Microsoft Office suite) has long been the small business database of choice, for enterprise level solutions SQL Server is required. Microsoft is actively encouraging users onto this more sophisticated platform by making Access 2000 compatible with SQL Server. This means solutions can be developed using Access and easily scaled up to the more powerful SQL Server when the need arises.

Amazon.com Review

Professional SQL Server Development with Access 2000 shows the experienced database programmer or administrator how to take advantage of SQL Server using the built-in tools and capabilities of Access 2000. Filled with screen shots and plenty of practical advice for working with data, this book proves that Access is a great tool for getting the most out of SQL Server.

Usually associated with the lower end, Access 2000 has clearly grown up with the features that let you connect to SQL Server 7/2000, but with the convenience of a graphical tool. The book covers not only the features of Microsoft databases, but also how to rely on Access 2000 as your tool of choice for common administrative and programming tasks. Starting from table design, and the powerful database diagramming tools available in Access, you learn how to create effective database designs. And a full discussion of joins, indexes, constraints, views, and other advanced features make this book good for even more advanced readers. Besides admin functionality, there's coverage of VBA for database programmers, and T-SQL (Microsoft's version of SQL), including an excellent section on stored procedures and triggers.

While there's a lot of textual description in this book, there are also plenty of easy-to-understand screen shots, making this a useful resource to have at your desk. The graphics that detail the use of Access 2000 toolbars (which list the functions for each tiny button) are very good. The tutorial turns toward using Access 2000 features (forms and reports) to work with SQL Server data on the back end. Later sections examine the options you have for Web development, including Access's own Data Access Pages, data sheets, and a short introduction to using Active Server Pages on Microsoft IIS.

Reference sections of database security and upsizing older Access databases to SQL Server help round out this comprehensive and thoughtfully written book, which shows that Access 2000 really can let you access higher-end features on today's Windows platform. This book is perfect for any administrator or database programmer who wants to benefit from Access and SQL Server used together. --Richard Dragan

More About the Author

I am an author/trainer/webmaster. My area of specialization is database development. Among the programming topics that I like to prepare content about are SQL Server, T-SQL, Access, VBA, Visual Basic .NET, ADO.NET, and ASP.NET. I especially like working on the intersection of two or three of these topics at once.

I have been working with personal computers since the early 1980's. In the late 1980's, I started a part-time computer consulting practice, and I devoted myself to the practice on a full-time basis starting in 1991. I initially started consulting with 1-2-3 and Symphony before migrating to Microsoft Access as my main consulting tool. Microsoft selected me as a Microsoft Access hero to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Microsoft Access (http://www.microsoft.com/Office/previous/access/10years/dobson.asp).

Starting around 1999, I added coverage of Microsoft SQL Server. In fact, I spent a lot of time focusing on advanced ways of using Access and SQL Server together, and I authored a book on these topics. In early 2002, I added coverage of Visual Basic .NET, ADO.NET, and ASP.NET. I eventually authored two books and two DVDs on these topics. Most recently, I focused on SQL Server 2005 Express, Visual Basic Express, and Visual Web Developer Express. My most recent book describes how to build database applications with these three tools.

In addition to authoring books, I regularly write for computer periodicals. In the past several years, my articles appeared in such publications as SQL Server Magazine, Smart Access, Visual Studio Developer, SQL Server Professional, and SQL Server Solutions. My favorite approach in books and articles is to explain and demonstrate new or difficult topics in a way that makes them easy to use by beginning and intermediate level developers and professionals who create their own database solutions.

I have always enjoyed making presentations on computer topics. Starting in the early 1990's, I presented sessions at computer conferences. In 1999, I started sponsoring my own seminar training events. My sixth annual seminar training event consists of 21 hours of database development training for SQL Server Express, Visual Basic Express, and Visual Web Developer Express (http://www.programmingmsaccess.com/seminar2006).

5.0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver!, December 29, 2000

If you need to upsize an Access database to SQL Server, this is the book which will solve all the little problems you might have. Not only does it talk you through installing all the necessary software, but it also walks you through just about every process you are going to perform in getting all those Access objects converted to Project form.

If you are new to ADO, the book contains an excellent primer to the subject to get you started, although you might want to consult the Microsoft documentation for some of the more in-depth stuff.

Speaking personally, this book has served as my bible in upsizing a 240-user Access database replicated over 7 sites to SQL server. If we found it useful, you will too.

Get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Programmer's Guide, October 12, 2000
This review is from: Professional SQL Server Development with Access 2000 (Paperback)
This is a book that takes you to the heart of Access 2000 and SQL Server, unlike boring syntax reference manuals. The author's style and presentation guide you, at a comfortable pace, from installation steps at the beginning, to development in Access and SQL within the first few chapters. A must read for developers and want-to-be developers. Numerous examples fill the pages of this programmer to programmer quide. Within the first couple of hours after reading this book, I was able to dive right in to SQL 7.0 development using Access 2000 project as a front-end development tool. I have spent many hours attending online seminars and reading reference maunals, this is the first book I have found on the market that answered nearly all of the development questions I have had. Thank you, Rick Dobson, for taking the time to put together one of the best development books on the market for your fellow programmers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource for making the transition to SQL Server, July 8, 2002
This review is from: Professional SQL Server Development with Access 2000 (Paperback)
By far the best book I have seen regarding the difficulties encountered when moving an Access application to SQL Server. Until reading this book, I couldn't figure out why my Access queries that were 'converted' into Stored Procedures could not reference each other, why my forms would not work, why the tables weren't updateable (primary keys weren't copied during conversion), etc.
All these and many more perplexing issues are clearly explained here. For quickest results, read Appendices B and C, then the first 7 chapters before trying to convert your first Access database to SQL Server.
