Book Description

November 1999
Microsoft Commerce Server 3.0 (MSCS) is part of Microsoft Site Server 3.0, Commerce Edition. While Site Server encompasses a wide variety of markets, MSCS focuses on the creation of electronic commerce (EC) sites. EC is already a booming market, with over $200 billion in sales projected by the year 2001 (source: Ernst & Young), and thousands of companies, from veterans of the traditional retail chain to Internet startups, are rushing into this business. MSCS has already been successfully used for a number of ventures, including The Gap on-line store, 1-800-FLOWERS, Barnes and Noble, and many others. Professional Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition covers all you need to know to make the most out of this powerful product filling in all the gaps in the documentation and taking discussions beyond the abstract and into the real world. In the book we begin by examining how to determine our system requirements, and how to install and administer SSCE. We then discuss the sample stores provided with SSCE and see how they demonstrate the principles of e-commerce that wil be important in our own sites. Next, we discuss security issues - an essential part of any online store. We follow this with an in-depth look at how we can manage and customize the whole of the purchase process, according to our needs. Next we look at how to use and extend the Microsoft Wallet - and also when we shouldn't use it. We finish by looking at how to optimize the perormance of your store. The book provides strong examples throughout, and contains 3 case studies demonstrating the principles described herein.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This book is aimed at developers who wish to deploy e-commerce applications on the Windows NT platform. It assumes no previous knowledge of Site Server, but it would be useful for you to have some SQL Server knowledge, have a basic understanding of ASP, and be familiar with IIS and Windows NT.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not excellent!, December 20, 1999
This review is from: Professional Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition (Paperback)
It is a good book which introduce SSCE, especially for the beginner. Howerver, it is not excellent (like "Professional ASP 2.0" from wrox).

I really studied something from this book which covers some very important topics such as Commerce Server Objects, Pipeline, and Wallet/Pay Now. However, this author did not want to explain them deeply. A lot of things could be gotten from SSCE document. The first six chapters are nothing. Not only waste your time but also challenge your patient.

Don't expect this book is a bible for SSEC. It is just "second" reference.

Before reading this book, I finished other two books (Pro ASP 2/Pro Site Server 3) from wrox, they are excellent. After that, I read this book, I am really disappointed, because this book did not explain SSCE in details and at the advanced level.

Honestly, only because this book is from wrox and the author did good jobs in others, I gave this book "3 stars". If not, I gave it 2 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent, but not excellent, January 18, 2000
This review is from: Professional Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition (Paperback)
I found this book to be helpful in some respects - it went into great detail about setting up a store, and some of the basics. However, I found that the really tough SSCE pieces -- such as pipelines -- were not covered in enough depth to be useful to me. I have a better conceptual understanding now, but I'm not sure I know any more about how to actually implement a real pipeline for a real site.

4.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant tutorial, November 25, 1999
This review is from: Professional Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition (Paperback)
I'm a Web Developer, dealing with eCommerce without SSCE so far. I've been trying to increase the functionality of our sites, so I reverted to SSCE recently.

The book provides an excellent tutorial, starting from scratch and moving on to advanced issues like personalisation & cross-selling, in a very understandable way. Just a basic knowledge of ASP and IIS issues is required to go through the book easily.

Finally, i found issues covered on the book that we'd never even though of, like cross-selling, buy-now features, security & performance considerations and workarounds etc.

An excellent book !
