5.0 out of 5 stars What She's Best At, November 14, 2008

This review is from: Professional Smart Aleck (Audio CD)
Hey, what's on this CD? Oh yeah, a barrel of laughs!

I first heard Carla in person as a twenty-one-year-old musician in the employ of Judith Tulloch. We were performing at Bodles Opera House in Chester, NY, and Carla was on the bill after Judith's group. I didn't expect her to be anything but really good. What I didn't expect was to start laughing hard enough to fall off the chair I was sitting in. (Plus, when she sang "The Wedgie," I started harmonizing.) She also wowed me and my companions with her superb guitar skills, playing her instrumental rendition of "Zip a Dee Doo Dah" and a Chopin composition (the name of which escapes me).

Two years later, I asked a good friend of mine who was going to hear her play again in Chester to purchase me my first copy of this CD. I was duly impressed by what i heard and how dependably funny Carla's performance was It incredibly incapsulates what she's best at, making people laugh and accompanying herself oh, so well. (And, don't stick your tongue out at her renditions of "That's Alright Mama" and "Cascade.")

Plus, she impeccably leaves the listener hanging with a preview of her Love Boat parody, "The Colon," the full version of which would materialize on her third release, Sick Humor. The irony of that scenario is that she became deeply ill and suffered two strokes in 2002, after she'd already written "The Colon." I'd call that a topical premonition.

This is certainly one of those albums I've all but put into my mouth and swallowed whole. I've listened to it countless times since 2003. And, I've learned to perform some of the songs, myself, namely "The Guy who Changes the Light Bulbs" and "The Wedgie."
