5.0 out of 5 stars Gives basic techniques and focuses on business
The title of the book is a bit misleading. I thought it would be entirely technique, poses and lighting. It's more of a "how to get started in a wedding photography business." But to its credit, the wedding photographer isn't trying to make a career giving pictures away for nothing, but that's where many make mistakes right off the bat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Really dated
While this isn't a *bad* book, it's getting really dated. All of the pictures and examples are from the early '80s, and look like they're set in the late '70s. Quite a few of the effects given went out of style years ago.

The book delves into facets that others don't. It has a sample contract which is very thorough. The verbage in the book about clients is very strong, almost bullyish. I wouldn't simply make a copy and show it to a client. The section that gives a list of expected photographs is very useful. Many of the poses and techniques kindle imagination and are very helpful as a quick refresher course.

The book seems geared toward an experienced photographer interested in handling weddings. The equipment checklist in the back of the book sounds more like an everything plus the kitchen sink list, and many beginning photographers will not have anywhere near that much equipment.

All in all, I'd recommend this book in a heartbeat. Its drawbacks are insignificant in comparison to the benefits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for the beginning wedding photographer!, July 31, 2001
This review is from: Professional Techniques for the Wedding Photographer: A Complete Guide to Lighting, Posing and Taking Photographs that Sell (Photography for All Levels: Advanced) (Paperback)
I am about to photograph my first wedding and this book has helped me prepare for it. The book goes through the basics of setting up your business (booking, pricing, etc.) and then takes a detailed look at what is expected of today's wedding photographer. There are lots of interesting photos in the book and most of them have an explanation on how you can create the same look. There are also checklists of photos you should always take and equipment that you will want to take to the wedding. Overall, I found this book very helpful in starting my photography business and would recommend it to any beginning wedding photographer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for the Aspiring Wedding Photographer, August 9, 1999

Photographer/writer George Schuab did very well writing this book for the aspiring wedding photographer. Complete with wedding contract sample, wedding photography checklist and almost every other page gets right down to the nuts and bolts of PROPERLY photographing key events during the Wedding Day. Using natural and artificial light, posing, creative filters, choosing a professional lab, assembling brand name wedding albums, being sensitive to the needs of the bride, posing groups and even being properly attired for the occassion. This book is a definite must have in the library of all professional wedding photographers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive Wedding Photography Book, November 15, 1999
By A Customer
This book includes all the major topics, and does it well. The book addresses how to set up a business, how to get clients, how to work with them, how to choose gear and how to take the pictures. And, it has some very nice photography.

The author writes well, and the book is well illustrated. He describes how to do some different shots, each time presenting in about two pages a diagram of how the lighting was arranged, the resulting photograph and a well-written description of how to do the shot. The book is well printed.

The author describes the gear choices available in a clear, yet open-minded way. He provides a valuable summary gear checklist, consistent with his well-organized, list-based approach.

The author shows how the work is done, keeping the context of the social event and the relationships depicted in mind. This book is an outstanding achievement that I would advise anyone who is in the field or has an interest to read.

Peter

Why reinvent the wheel when Schaub and Sklute have set the groundwork for you? Reviewed are what brides want to see in purchasing their wedding shots. Handy reference tool to freshen up on what works and what doesn't.

I purchased this book first, read it in a day, and haven't looked at it again. The most useful elements were the business section: it has a mockup of a contract and other information on business and legal issues. Otherwise I found the book less than useful. The photos aren't very impressive, rendering the advice a little suspect. There isn't very much technical information about posing or lighting, it's all generalized and vague. Nor are there wedding-related tips, most of the advice in this book could be summed up by "know how to work your camera". I went to the bookstore and picked up Wedding Photography by Mark Cleghorn, which was much more useful. I recommend you look elsewhere for wedding photography books.

1.0 out of 5 stars Outdated Style, January 18, 2008
This review is from: Professional Techniques for the Wedding Photographer: A Complete Guide to Lighting, Posing and Taking Photographs that Sell (Photography for All Levels: Advanced) (Paperback)
This is a very outdated book. The images are very dated and the style is too stiff. I am guessing that the pictures were old when the book was originally published in 2001. If you fancy yourself as a contemporary photographer then look elsewhere.

I recommend looking up The Top 10 Wedding Photographers in Popular Photography. Their styles are fresh even if some of them like Jerry Ghionis are highly posed. Even Jerry's work doesn't have a posed look to it.

If for no other reason, buy this book for the amazing wedding photographs by Ken Sklute. Ken is one of the finest wedding photographers in the country and this is a wonderful collection of some of his finest work. There are certainly ideas for EVERY wedding photographer in these pictures.

The author George Schaub has provided an updated rewrite from the orignal edition of this book. He walks you through everything you need to understand to be a working wedding photographer.

I bought this book to get pointers to shooting weddings. It really didn't help me that much but it does have some nice pictures.
