Very Disappointing,
By A Customer
This review is from: 101 Professional Tips to Make Your Photos Sing (Paperback)
I was very disappointed when I first received this book. I can hardly call it a book - it is more like a pamphlet. There are no photos other than those on the front cover. This book is precisely what it claims to be... 50 pages of 101 tips and nothing more. There is not sufficient information to truly make your photos "sing" as the title claims. If you are a beginner searching for a good resource, do not choose this one because you will be completely lost in trying to understand what the author is saying. He does not take into account that the reader may not be completely familiar with f-stops or shutter speed, essential information of which he does not bother to explain. My suggestion is that if you want a book that has clear explanations and valuable information on how to take photos, try The Basic Book of Photography by Tom Grimm. This resource provides much more information and truly enlightens you to the art of photography.

I've looked for 50 Years for this book,
This review is from: 101 Professional Tips to Make Your Photos Sing (Paperback)
Mr. Barnes has written the book I've been looking for since my first days of photography in Junior High. He has anticipated every question I have ever had about the use of a camera and how to make sense of the setting options. He has tips about taking certain shots to acheive specific objectives. I had expected to pay twice as much for half the information. You will be thrilled with the results when you follow his tips.

Wonderfully entertaining! Reading Billy E. Barnes book: 101 PROFESSIONAL TIPS TO MAKE YOUR PHOTOS SING is like talking with Billy or watching one of his documentaries on Public Television. The book is filled with creative, practical and informative suggestions for photographers of all levels of experience. The icon and play on words for tip titles is entertaining and keeps the reader's curiousity "rolling." I wish the book had been published years before...I would have had my wedding protrait taken in black and white film! Thanks for sharing your expertise and wealth of knowledge with all of us Billy!

straight to the point,

Barnes is a craftsman. His focus is on getting excellent results. He doesn't worship his equipment or cling to ritual in using it. But he does UNDERSTAND his equipment and makes CHOICES about how to use it so as to get wonderful pictures in many different circumstances. Billy stands in a line of plain-spoken North Carolina artists who willingly share the craft that gives them such pleasure.

I thought this book was very good because it was really easy to read. It was written in a way that made the fundamentals of photography clear. The author used examples to show what is behind the mechanics. He used simple language. It is a really good book for beginners. It is a good one for people who think they cannot learn how to take good pictures.

maybe a good book (booklet) for beginners,

I am really disappointed with this book, probably because i had too great expectations connected with a title. I hoped to find some advice on making good photos rather than general information for the beginners in photography (kinds of film, types of lenses etc.).

What a waste...,

Disappointed! What an understatement. This book (actually more of a pamphlet) has nothing to offer to anyone except perhaps the first time SLR owner with *very* limited experience with *any* camera. Don't bother.
