5.0 out of 5 stars Heirloom Chess Board
Beautiful, wood chess board of heirloom quality. Very sturdy, heavy and marked in tournament fashion on sides. Large felt circles on bottom of board so as not to scratch the table. Goes perfectly with Stauton No. 5 tournament chess pieces. My 12 year old son, who loves chess, was thrilled to receive the board and pieces for his birthday! When I bought this gift, it...

3.0 out of 5 stars Misrepresentation!
It's nice looking quality Chess board, but the main image shown on Amazon and the box it comes in is a misrepresentation! Don't expect to see any number and letter notation on the board or anywhere in the box. If you want that on a chess board, you might want to look elsewhere!

When I bought this gift, it was with a notion of buying a gift that would last a lifetime. I honestly see it being in my son's home when he is an adult -- it's that nice. Great elegant gift for the chess lover!

4.0 out of 5 stars High quality chess board, great for a gift, July 30, 2010

I purchased this item with the corresponding Staunton chess set No. 5 along with my coworkers for a wedding gift for our boss. The back of the board is the lighter color like the squares, so we plan on all signing the back, which should make a very unique gift.

The board is heavy and large. The inlaid squares are mahogany and sycamore--very nicely done. The product was also made without child labor in Poland from plantation wood. Overall, I am very impressed. This product is better than I thought it would be for the price.

The only reason I took off one star is because the corresponding chess pieces are not a perfect color match. That is, the dark chess pieces are darker than the chess board I received. However, the set looks very nice all set up, and the near-match does not detract from the overall look of the game.

Like others have mentioned, there is felt on the bottom to keep your table nice and unscathed. I definitely recommend this

This is a very high quality inlaid chess board! You do not need to spend big bucks to get a beautifully looking display chess board, this type of boards are actually the boards made to play! This board comes with no finish at all. If you like, remove the 4 felt pad at the bottom, make sure no residues, then apply generous amount of Tung Oil to the bottom first. Tung oil is the best wood care product money can buy, when tung oil dries it just looks like a layer of polyurethane! The more layers that you apply, the better! I applied 5 layers at the bottom of the board. Then I turn it over, use masking tape to protect the playing part, and applied another 5 layers of tung oil. When you apply tung oil around the playing area, you need to do this: apply the first layer generously, wait for 15 minutes, then immediately apply the second layer. Then remove the masking tape, otherwise, when tung oil dries, you might mess up the beauty of the edge by removing the masking tape! Remove masking tape before tung oil dries! Repeat this process one more time (that gives you 4 layers of coating)! When you apply the last layer, apply tung oil to the sides of the board! Viola! A beautiful chess board! For the playing area, you need to wax it, please do not use tung oil or paints or any kind, only wax!

This board is the same as professional players used in tournaments for 2700 level players, except the world championship---they use good looking boards! You do not need $$$ displaying boards! The quality of this board is the same as boards sold by famous chess suppliers more than $100!!

This is a very beautiful, reasonably prices chess board. I purchased it as a gift for my husband and he has really enjoyed it. It has nice felts on the under surface so it won't scratch our dining table, and it is a good size.

This is a well-crafted board that looks as though it will last for years. I bought it for my kids for Christmas, but we'll all play on it. Very happy with the purchase!

This is an attractive chess board. I wanted something nice to display in the family room of our home and to complement my husband's marble chess set. We enjoy using the board for our family chess games and it looks very nice.
