5.0 out of 5 stars This book was the Driving factor in my becoming a MCSD
If your trying to pass the VB desktop/enterprise or Analyzing Requirements MCP exams this is the book for you. If you can read this book, follow the examples, and understand all of the concepts you can pass any of the before mentioned exams. This was my first Wrox press book, I will never buy a computer book from any other publisher again.

Feel free to email me...

1.0 out of 5 stars A Seriously Flawed and sloppy work
This book may make for good reading but the Video store project does not work as it is written out here. The flaws in the code are so numerous and frustrating and it really amazes me everyone giving this book such high marks when the project from the book so obviously does not work. This book may make for good reading but the Video store project does not work as it is written out here. The flaws in the code are so numerous and frustrating and it really amazes me everyone giving this book such high marks when the project from the book so obviously does not work. Rocky makes use of the LSet statement to copy user-defined-types from one memory location to another with disasterous results. What galls me is that on his web site he defends his dubious methods and from the reviews for the version 6 edition of the book, as evidenced elsehwere here at amazon, he doesn't really make many changes in the new edition. Wrox press books are so promising at a glance but I find the examples are almost always seriously flawed. Beginning Database Programming with VB6 is the same way. You can read the best bits of these books on the MSDN library. Don't waste your money here....

5.0 out of 5 stars A cornucpia of OO in VB, usual excellence fm WROX and Lhotka, July 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Professional Visual Basic 5.0 Business Objects (Hardcover)
Speaking as a VB programmer, this book is very well written. Lhotka models a hypothetical VideoStore, and takes one step by step, explaining Object Orientation, all the wonderfully simple techniques like For Each Loop implementation for Parent-Child Objects. And after he makes you feel at the top of the world, he brings in DCOM, MTS and ASP ( One feels like VB OO expert, and by then One is!!! ).

This book is a must on developers library. I need it everytime, most of the times when I design and sometimes for inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read if developing Component Based C/S Solutions in VB5, January 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Professional Visual Basic 5.0 Business Objects (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book covering the basics of designing and developing component based client server solutions using VB. It's chapters on DCOM and MTS are good introductions to implementing these technologies in Visual Basic 5.0

4.0 out of 5 stars How it all hangs together!, February 22, 2002
This review is from: Professional Visual Basic 5.0 Business Objects (Hardcover)
If you want to know how the DNA/three tier architecture stuff hangs together, this book is a good start. I found the source code a bit buggy (I aint perfect myself) but you'll learn a thing or two while trying to make the sample applications work.

Good book!

The video store application delivers the understanding of how business objects work together and how you can make the most out of each mothod without straying from the tightly-cohesive path! If you think you know how to program, forget it! You will learn so much more from this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars I LUUUUV IT, January 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Professional Visual Basic 5.0 Business Objects (Hardcover)
I am a senior CS student and for a software class we are imitating a "real world" senario where the students comprise the company. Well this book has so many great ideas about software methodology it is unreal. This book also works great for VC++ or Borland Builder Pro++. The concepts are language independent. In fact you could make a VB front end and use C++ for performancing enhancing objects.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are serious about using OO with VB, get this book!, December 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Professional Visual Basic 5.0 Business Objects (Hardcover)
Even if you are a beginner, you will learn great things. The first chapter itself is loaded with topics on What OOP is and how it is used in VB - the book moves at a very good pace - not too slow! Language is clear and concise. I am readding from the beginning, every paragraph. Not just skimming through like other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Real concrete Examples!!, November 30, 1998
This review is from: Professional Visual Basic 5.0 Business Objects (Hardcover)
I work in VB and VC. This book has helped tie together many of COM's mysteries. It has not only helped my VB programming, but its concrete examples have improved my C++ programming. The author has the ability to simplify COM's concepts.

I can't say enough good things about this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A VB Classic, November 10, 1998
This review is from: Professional Visual Basic 5.0 Business Objects (Hardcover)
UML, COM, DCOM MTS, ASP you ask it, this book has it. Never before in my years of experience in VB have I seen a more subtle blend of basics and execution with such a wide coverage. Definitely one of the 3 best books for VB developers, the other 2 being Appelman's. Mr Lhotka has done an excellent job.
