Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The success of Wikipedia has proven just how effective wikis can be for collaborative editing on a large scale—larger than anyone originally thought possible. This book shows you how to install, use, manage, and extend a wiki using MediaWiki—the wiki engine used to power Wikipedia.

As each chapter builds on previous ones, tasks involving wikis progress from simple to those of increasing complexity and evolve from theory to case study. You'll learn wiki terminology and how to create user accounts and new pages, use wiki links, and find your way around the wiki. Special focus is placed on how wikis are used in software and web development projects and how their capabilities ideally suit a specific environment and audience. You'll quickly come to discover why wikis are a valuable addition for any organization that wants to increase productivity using web-based collaboration tools.

What you will learn from this book

  • When to use wikis instead of a more formal content management system
  • What to look for when evaluating wikis in order to avoid unexpected pitfalls

  • How to install MediaWiki using Apache, PHP, MySQL®, and other alternatives

  • How wikitext allows you to edit content from any web browser and create links to other wiki pages

  • Ways to comment on pages, move them, track changes, and syndicate wiki pages with RSS

This is one of the best technical guides I have encountered and I have used hundreds of them. I am not a programer, but I work with open source software regularly and I am comfortable hacking code.

I have administered simple MediaWiki sites successfully, but this book has shown me how to make major improvements with my existing sites, and will serve as a guide in the creation of many planned wikis. This book has also extended my understanding of php.

The author, not only clearly outlines how to work with MediaWiki software, but concisely and intelligently discusses the merits of options in configuring and working with the software.

Even if you are not currently administering a MediaWiki site, his discussion of formating wiki text is excellent for those seeking more than the basics.

I was very impressed by the clarity of the writing and the organization of this book. Many great specific examples on how to get your wiki up and running in MediaWiki, plus lots of helps for customization. My first experiece with a Wrox book. I will look to them for future resource needs.
If you can only afford one book to help you with MediaWiki this is the book to buy.

I just received the text. It has "beginner" information about what I consider fundamental structures of wikis and it includes resources where to find more info. I read it by jumping around in the book and I have had no problem. I find what I want and then see something interesting and move to it, so it is not a linear read like an instruction manual, more like a first pass resource manual for beginners. Looking for the next level up. I rate this a 4 for starters.

Where to next?
